This is exactly what I hope to find in France 🇫🇷

A small old oil painting, loosely painted on board, with the loveliest soft blue sky, autumnal trees and reflections on the water.

It measures just 28 x 22cm, so it’s one of those little paintings that can go almost anywhere.

Signed lower right and with plenty of age and wear around the edges, which I rather like.

And then there’s the easel…

I LOVE these old tabletop easels and they’re surprisingly difficult to find. This one has the prettiest carved detail and makes a lovely way to display a small painting, photograph, menu, old print… whatever you fancy.

Turns out, I don’t just buy chests of drawers… 😆

One of the things I love most about buying in France is that I find myself looking at completely different things.

Things I probably wouldn’t come across at home. Things I don’t necessarily need. Things I have absolutely no idea whether anybody else will want.

Which, after 40 years of buying antiques, is still the best sort of buying.

Old textiles, tiny mirrors, faded needlework, strange little boxes, paintings, pottery, pieces of old French life and anything with good colour, age or just that certain something that makes me pick it up.

Some sensible buys.

Some interesting buys.

A little look at what’s been coming home with us today 🇫🇷

Anything you’d have wrestled me for at the brocante? 👀

Apparently Tom has decided he’s coming for my job. 😆

Another one of his buys from Lyon and, I have to admit, I’m rather liking these.

Three old French enamel street signs in that fabulous deep cobalt blue, complete with old chips, knocks and years of wear.

They just feel SO French. 🇫🇷

And now I’ve propped them against our old stone wall, I completely get them as interiors pieces.

One on a kitchen wall.
Propped on a shelf.
Mixed in with paintings and old plates.
Or just somewhere that needs a little bit of France.

The Jean Larrivé and Claude Farrère ones are particularly lovely with the old occupations and dates still underneath.

So yes… Tom may actually have been onto something. 🙄

Three available, all bought in Lyon.

£95 each plus p&p.

Annoyingly, Tom found this one… 😆🇫🇷

Bought in Paris and I absolutely love it.

An old French oil painting of lilacs, all those faded mauves and creams, the sludgy green pot and a lovely little signature in the corner.

And then there’s the frame.

Chipped, battered, bits missing and absolutely perfect exactly as it is. Proper faded French grandeur.

It seems rather fitting that I’m giving Tom the credit , because 43 years ago today, on 2nd September 1983, we went on our first date.

Never did get round to getting married 😂 but apparently we did manage to spend 43 years buying old stuff together.

The French lampshade situation has escalated… 🇫🇷😂

We’ve finally arrived at our house in Verteuil-sur-Charente, via Paris, Lyon and rather a lot of antique hunting along the way.

And before I start showing you some of the bigger things I’ve bought, I thought we’d have our first proper faff with these.

Old French lampshades ❤️

Faded silk, pleats, ruching, braid, frills, wonky edges and absolutely no interest whatsoever in looking new.

Basically, faded French glamour in miniature.

I started buying a few in Paris and then somehow kept finding them. Pink ones, cream ones, tiny ones, elegant ones…

And now here we are. 😂

They sit so easily on a small tulip bulb ... or maybe you have a chandelier that needs these! Or just sat on a dressing table 💄

But grouped together in the sunshine against these old stone walls?

I’m smitten.

And I suspect this may not be the end of the French lampshade situation… 🇫🇷 let me know if you like then 🥰

Proof that small bedrooms can still have proper furniture 🤎

This sweet little Edwardian dressing table came my way today and it’s such a useful size.

Just 76cm wide and only 39cm deep, so it gives you three proper drawers and a lovely mirror without taking over the room.

And those handles 😍

Pretty turned legs, original castors, a beautifully shaped mirror and just enough Edwardian fussiness for me.

I think this would be gorgeous in a bedroom, dressing room or even tucked into an alcove where something modern would never look half as good.

Six drawers. Because apparently we all own more stuff than we'll admit to. 😆

These aren’t antique, but when something is this well made, I’m not going to get hung up on age.

A great solid pine chest with six proper drawers, dovetailed joints, panelled fronts, wooden k***s and lovely turned feet.

And SO much storage.

The sort of chest that works just about anywhere. Bedroom, spare room, landing, wherever your current piles of “stuff” happen to be living. 😂

Kinda chic to buy the pink ones 🌸

And frankly, I didn’t stand much chance with these.

A proper old Victorian chest of drawers, bun feet, original keyholes and layer upon layer of pale pink paint that’s been knocked, rubbed and worn over the years.

Old, useful furniture wearing pink rather well.
I'm a sucker for pink (as I know a lot of you are too 🌸)

And at 89cm wide, they’re a cracking size too.

89cm wide x 44cm deep x 84cm high

£320 plus courier delivery 🚚

DM me if the pink ones are calling your name 💕
