Not every piece needs to be pale pine.

These Victorian mahogany drawers have a quieter sort of charm.

Dark timber, original turned k***s, chunky bun feet and years of honest wear that tell their own story.

At 107cm wide they’re a useful size too. Large enough to provide proper storage, but not so large that they dominate a room.

I can imagine these sitting beneath a mirror in a hallway, paired with a lamp and a pile of books in a sitting room, or working beautifully in a bedroom where everything doesn’t have to match.

The rich colour contrasts beautifully with lighter walls, linens and painted furniture.

Condition is good overall for their age. There is some historical treated woodworm visible in the front bun feet, along with the expected marks and wear you’d hope to find on a piece that’s been around for well over a century.

Not perfect.

Just honest.

I bought this for the tiles.

Well, the honey pine, the turned legs and the two handy drawers helped too… but it was the tiles that caught my eye first.

Victorian washstands were originally designed for a bowl and jug before indoor plumbing became commonplace. These days they make brilliant little consoles, hallway tables, bathroom storage or kitchen pieces.

This one has a lovely warm colour, two drawers for hiding the everyday bits and pieces, and a lower shelf perfect for baskets, towels, shoes or whatever tends to gather by the door.

And then there are those floral tiles.

The sort of detail that makes a practical piece feel a little special.

Not everything needs to be on display. 🤍

One of the simplest ways to make a room feel calmer is to give all the bits and pieces a place to disappear to.

I’ve always had a soft spot for these.

When I had my shop, pieces like this never hung around for long.

I first fell in love with these on a buying trip in London ,many years ago.

Then, I found a shop in Tokyo selling them and somehow managed to squeeze 28 of them into my suitcase for the journey home.

They’re called Kokeshi dolls and traditionally they’re hand-turned wooden dolls from northern Japan.

I’ve always been told they were given to children as rewards or gifts (especially at Sunday schools etc) , and they are meant to carry good karma with them wherever they go.

Whether that’s true or not, I’ve always found them impossible to resist.

Every face is slightly different.

Every painter leaves their own mark.

And lined up together they somehow manage to look both peaceful and full of personality at the same time.

These arrived from Kempton this week and I couldn’t wait to get them photographed.

Some pieces just get everything right.

No fancy mouldings.
No marble tops.
No elaborate carving.

Just honest Victorian pine, lovely warm colour, wooden k***s and proportions that seem to work in almost any room.

I particularly love the shaped apron at the base. It’s such a small detail but it softens the whole piece and gives it plenty of character.

The drawers run well, it’s a useful size, and at 100cm wide it’s large enough to earn its keep without dominating a room.

The sort of chest that would look equally at home in a bedroom, landing, hallway or sitting room.

One of those pieces I’d happily find space for myself ❤️

A welcome break from drawers, cupboards and storage posts… (you know were thinking it 😆)

This signed floral oil on canvas caught my eye straight away..

A loose, abundant arrangement of roses and garden flowers painted against a soft neutral background, with lovely texture and visible brushwork throughout.

The colours are beautiful. Soft pinks, creams and blues mixed with richer reds and ochres. The sort of painting that seems to work just as well in a country cottage as it would in a more contemporary room.

I’ve photographed it in our lounge this morning and, paired with a bunch of peonies, it feels as though it has always belonged there.
