Last month our WI trip was to Heckington Windmill. What a fascinating visit! Most of our intrepid members braved the incredibly steep ladders (!) to view all of the different floors and learn about how the grain was lifted by chain; about the louvred sails providing the wind power to drive the different types of millstones and much more. We were considerately guided up and down the ladders and fascinated to hear that a single hardworking miller (with a couple of lads) was responsible for every part of the process from unloading grain to loading sacks of flour, the final product.
Many types of flour are still produced on site whilst the sails are being refurbished, and the Eight Sails Brewery is also worth sampling 🍻
Lunch, tea & cake rounded off a really enjoyable and educational afternoon.

Today we visited the magnificent Wentworth Woodhouse near Rotherham, South Yorkshire. This stunning stately home is being gradually restored by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, largely staffed by volunteers. Our incredibly knowledgeable guide Reg spent almost two hours telling the story of the house/s, people and history associated with the estate since the 13th Century, and we viewed a number of fabulously ornate rooms including the Marble Saloon, and the Whistlejacket Room. Often used in period dramas as a Royal residence, the grandeur is spectacular. The eastern façade is twice the length of Buckingham Palace; and there are over 5 miles of corridors. Do visit, you won’t regret it: take a tour, eat in the Butler’s Pantry and support this undoubtedly worthwhile charity.

Happy 100th birthday to Sir David Attenborough. I have loved watching his films for as long as I can remember. Sunday evenings watching a ‘David Attenborough’ with tea by the fire as a family is still my favourite time of the week. The secret worlds he revealed in far flung places helped to ignite in me a love of nature that inspired me to study zoology and has shaped the path my life has taken.
Here is my small tribute - thank you to DA for everything he has done throughout his life for nature and conservation 🥰

Last week we went on our first social trip of the new programme - to the Tea House in the Woods, at Woodhall Spa. What a lovely place to eat a tasty lunch!
We also enjoyed a stroll in the warm sunshine, visiting the fabulous variety of independent shops.
A very nice start to our WI Trips!
