ELITE EXPLAINS: Why do clothes shrink? 👕📏

Ever bought something that fits perfectly… then suddenly it feels a little too snug after a few washes? 😬

There are two big factors when it comes to shrinkage: the quality of the garment AND how you look after it.

Better-quality clothing generally uses more carefully constructed and treated fabrics, helping garments hold their shape and size for longer. That’s particularly important with workwear — when something is being worn and washed week after week, buying purely on price can sometimes cost you more in replacements in the long run.

But even great clothing needs a little TLC! 🧺 Always check the care label, avoid washing hotter than necessary and be careful with high-heat tumble drying. Heat and agitation can cause fibres — particularly cotton — to contract.

Ever spotted GSM in a clothing description and wondered what on earth it means? 👀

GSM stands for Grams per Square Metre and, simply put, it tells you the weight of the fabric.

👕 Lower GSM = generally lighter and more breathable
👚 Mid GSM = a great everyday balance of comfort and durability
🧥 Higher GSM = generally heavier, thicker and more substantial

But higher GSM doesn’t automatically mean better quality — the right weight depends on the garment, what you’re using it for and when you’ll be wearing it.
