10th of September 1801 Marie Laveau was born.
She is probably the most famous of all Voodoo practitioners and made a living as a hairdresser and magical practitioner, living all her life in New Orleans.
Her tomb is well visited in the city cemetary where she still receives petitions for help.

9th of September According to Chase's Calendar of Events, today celebrates 'Wonderful Weirdos: Nothing is as dull as being normal, boring and average. Celebrate being weird .... and encouraging weirdness.'
Weird was originally a word which meant something like having the ability to control destiny. The Norse Goddesses of Fate, the three Norns were said to control the Weird of everyone through their magical abilities.
Later weird or wyrd was applied to anyone who had magical or supernatural abilities. Shakespeare famously used it to describe the three Witches in 'Macbeth' as Weird Sisters. Terry Pratchett also used the term as a book title to describe a coven of three Witches, Magrat, Nanny Ogg and the formidable Esme Weatherwax.
To me 'weirdness' expresses the ability to see beyond the confines of convention and acceptebiltiy and perhaps even to live beyond or outside of the bonds of the social norm.
To a lot of people, being a Witch is a bit weird, to me it is normal. So for me being Wyrd is the new normal :)

8th of September is the feast of Oshun, goddess of love, beauty and sweet water.
Her symbol is the vulture, which was the symbol used in ancient Egypt by the Queen, who was known as the Mother of the country and its people.
Oshun likes offerings in twos and her favourite number is 5. She also loves the colour yellow (she is often depicted wearing a yellow dress, and this is the colour her worshippers wear too) and amber is he favourite jewel.
Give her sandalwood incense and offerings of fans, mirrors, eggs, basil and cinnamon, oh and of course honey.

7th of September Today the famous Abbots Bromley Horn Dance will take place in the Staffordshire village where it has been performed since at least 1226, when it was first recorded.
The six dancers plus the fool, bowman, hobby horse and Maid Marion will be dancing around the village and surrounding area all day. They start at 8 am when the horns are collected from St Nicholas church.

In other words a day to do something you have been putting off - cutting the lawn for example, as the grass has grown enormously since we have had a bit of rain!

5th of September 1946 Freddie Mercury was born.
Well actually Farrokh Bulsara was born in Zanzibar. He was a quite, shy young man with an amazing knack of being able to play on the piano just about any music he heard on the radio.
He studied graphic design in London, at Ealing art college, where he became friends with Roger Taylor and together they ran a second hand clothes stall in Kensington Market and joined various bands.
In 1970 Taylor joined the band Smile, with Brian May. Freddie soon added his vocals to the mix and the line up was completed when John Deacon joined as bassist in 1971. It was around then that Freddie officially changed his name and his flamboyant stage personality began to shine through.
It was Freddie who changed the band's name to Queen and designed their distinctive logo and thus began their phenomenal rise to fame.
Queen songs, many written by Freddie, have become standards, well known and bopped along to in many a car.
Freddie died in 1991, he would have been 80 today.
Happy Birthday Freddie, rocking through the heavens!

4th of September is St Rose of Viterbo's day. She is the patron saint of florists and flower growers. She was known to foretell the future, so a good day to try a bit of divination. Or light a candle to her and ask for her help in finding out about what the future holds for you.

3rd of September In 1752 today Britain moved from the old Julian Calendar to the more accurate Gregorian Calendar.
It was done very simply by September the 2nd being followed, not by September the 3rd, but by September the 14th. No messing about there!
There was rioting in the streets with people demanding the days back that the government had 'stolen'.
And this is why we still reckon some days as Old Style (by the Julian Calendar) and also means we get to celebrate some fun stuff twice, once by the modern calendar then again by the Julian.

2nd of September is the feast of Ariadne and Dionysus.
Ariadne was the daughter of King Minos who helped Theseus escape from the Minotaur's lair by giving him a ball of string to unwind as he went in, so that he could find his way out of the labyrinth again.
Theseus repaid her by taking her on his ship, then abandoning her on an island and sailing off.
Ariadne was so distraught that she was about to throw herself into the sea when he was found by the god of w**e, Dionysus. He fell in love with her, married her and made her immortal - so stuff you Theseus!
Ariadne is known as the mistress of the sacred Dancing Ground, the classical unicursal maze - a maze with only one path in to the centre and out again.
This is the path of initiation, into the spiritual centre, which changes the initiate forever.

1st September! Rabbits to one and all!
Well folks we've made it through another month, the seasons turn, we have had some rain! Yay! And we are now officially into metreological autumn.
September is sacred to Pomona the Roman goddess of apples, orchards, all fruit and abundance. She is a goddess of 'place', wherever there are fruit trees, that place you can find Pomona.
Her symbol is the pruning knife, she is not a goddess of wild places but of order and cultivation.
