Your child is already a scientist. 🔬

Seriously.

Do they ask why? approximately 847 times a day?

Do they make predictions about what’s going to happen?

Do they poke, mix, build, pull things apart and generally test absolutely everything?

Do they get it wrong… then immediately have another go?

That’s science.

Children are naturally curious. They don’t need to know complicated formulas or have all the answers to think like scientists. They need opportunities to question, investigate, experiment, fail, change something and try again.

And that’s exactly what we want to nurture.

Our Curiosity Boxes aren’t about getting the “right” result as quickly as possible. They’re about giving children the freedom to DO science — at home and in the classroom — and discover what happens for themselves.

Because the child asking “but what happens if I do THIS?” today could be the scientist, engineer, inventor or problem-solver tackling something enormous tomorrow.

The ‘BER months are officially here and at Curiosity Box HQ, that means things are about to get BUSY. 🍂🔬

September brings a new school term and new opportunities to get practical STEM into classrooms.

October? We’ll obviously be finding an excuse for some suitably spooky science. 🎃

Then November and December arrive VERY quickly, bringing Christmas shopping, curious little scientists to buy for, our Christmas shop and plenty happening behind the scenes at CBHQ. 🎁

And amongst all of that, we’ve got STEM clubs, a new initiative on the horizon, school boxes, new partnerships, PTA affiliation programme, projects and thousands more children getting hands-on with science.

Basically…

Four months. A LOT of STEM.

And we are very ready for it. 🧪

Welcome back to a new school term! 📚🧪

New term, new topics and a whole load of new things to discover.

At The Curiosity Box, we’re big believers that some of the best STEM learning happens when children actually get to do it.

That’s why our KS2 school kits give teachers a ready-to-use practical STEM resource for the classroom — helping children explore curriculum science through experimenting, building, testing and problem-solving.

But curiosity doesn’t have to stop when the school bell rings.

Practical science shouldn’t mean a teacher spending their evening trying to source 30 of everything. 🧪😩

We know the reality of delivering brilliant hands-on STEM in a classroom.

😂 “Muuuum… Daaaad… I’M BORED.”

Said every child, approximately 47 times a day during the summer holidays. 😂☀️

But boredom can actually be the perfect starting point for a bit of curiosity. 💡

You don’t need fancy equipment or hours of preparation either. Give them a challenge, a few everyday materials and permission to experiment.

🌉 Try this: Can you build a bridge using ONLY paper and tape that will hold a pile of coins?

Don’t show them how. Don’t make it for them. Let them build, test, collapse, rethink and try again. 🧠🙌

💡 STOP TELLING CHILDREN THE ANSWER. LET THEM WORK IT OUT. 🔬🛠️

One of the most important things we build into Curiosity Box resources isn’t actually an experiment, it’s the opportunity to get things wrong.

Our activities take children through processes such as the engineering design cycle:

🤔 Predict — What do I think will happen?
🧪 Test — Let’s find out.
❌ It didn’t work — Why not?
🔧 Tweak — What could I change?
🔁 Test again — Did that make it better?

Because sometimes it shouldn’t work perfectly first time.

When children build, experiment and investigate with practical STEM, there needs to be room for things to wobble, fall apart, give an unexpected result or simply not work.

That’s where some of the best learning happens. 🧠✨

We don’t want children to associate doing something with an instant reward or instant success every single time. Real science and engineering simply don’t work like that.

Scientists repeat experiments. Engineers redesign prototypes. Inventors make version 2… and 3… and 27. 😂

So our resources encourage children to make mistakes, problem-solve, adapt, improve and try again, rather than having an adult immediately step in with the solution.

Sometimes the most useful thing we can say is:

“Hmm. That didn’t work. What could you try next?” 💡

Because there should always be room for improvement. ❤️

🌍🌊 WHY is everyone suddenly talking about El Niño?

El Niño itself isn’t unusual, it’s a natural climate pattern that happens every few years. But this one has scientists paying particularly close attention. 👀

The current El Niño is already classed as strong and is still intensifying. As of August, Pacific temperatures in the key Niño 3.4 region were around 2.2°C above the relevant average, while heat stored beneath the equatorial Pacific during July reached its highest level in records going back to 1979. Current models suggest this event could eventually peak at levels above the warmest observed since 1950. 🌡️🌊

THAT’S why it’s making headlines. 📰

A stronger El Niño can disrupt normal weather patterns around the planet, shifting rainfall, increasing drought risk in some regions, bringing heavier rain to others and influencing temperatures and storm tracks. But importantly, “strong El Niño” does not automatically mean extreme weather everywhere. Its effects vary hugely depending on where you live and what other climate patterns are doing at the same time.

It’s a brilliant example for children of how something happening in one enormous ocean can influence weather systems thousands of miles away. 🤯🌎

We’ll be keeping our curious eyes on this one! 👀🔬
