For any members interested, this is an opportunity from the Outreach Manager from the recent Mary Q of Scots exhibition at Perth Museum.

Hi everyone,

We’re inviting expressions of interest for a short embroidery project as part of Lend and Mend.

Building on the embroidery work from the Last Letter or Mary Queen of Scots exhibition, we’re looking for a small number of volunteers to help create new embroidered panels. These will take inspiration from the original MQS designs, as well as the embroidered pieces from the exhibition.

Some of you may already be familiar with the flax apron developed through an earlier project, this will form the base for the work, with volunteers contributing to individual embroidered pieces on the panels of the apron.

Volunteers will be offered the opportunity to attend an introductory session to learn more about Mary, Queen of Scots embroidery and the approach behind the original pieces before beginning their own work.

If you’re interested in taking part, please send an expression of interest by Monday 22 June. Work on the embroidered panels will begin shortly afterwards, with an intended completion date of 16 July.

Whether you’re an experienced embroiderer or keen to try something new, we’d love to hear from you.

To express your interest or find out more, please contact [email protected] .

Something that be of interest to any members who are knitters.

The Fleece to Fashion team at the University of Glasgow are delighted to let you know that the book of the project, Knitting in Scotland: Culture, Craft and Industry is available as a free download here:

https://www.bloomsburycollections.com/monograph?docid=b-9781350361744&st=Knitting

The fully illustrated book tells the story of Scottish knitting and knitwear with a focus on the period from the late nineteenth century to the present day.
Recent reappraisals of the industrial revolution and traditional craft economies, and the recent revival of hobby knitting during the Covid-19 pandemic, have raised new questions about the roles of social communities, sustainability and women’s domestic work in the textile industries.

We're always looking to expand on the range of skills we teach here at CSSC, and Chloe has come up with yet another brilliant course, exploring another heritage embroidery technique to add to your repertoire. Stumpwork has its roots in historic embroidery practices and is used to build raised, sculptural elements that add depth, structure and movement to textile work. It's especially effective for florals, leaves and insects, where raised forms help bring natural subjects to life.
