Last year: protecting the carrier. This week: preparing for disposal.

HMS Richmond’s next chapter is a hard one to watch.

The retired frigate arrived in Portsmouth under tow on 15 October. The Royal Navy says she will undergo preparations for disposal in due course.

In 2025, she was protecting the UK carrier group in the Indo-Pacific alongside HMS Prince of Wales. The Navy announced her retirement in July, citing the rising cost and risk of maintaining older ships.

A ship leaves the fleet. The dits stay with her people.

Cannons need air support, apparently.
Eighteen historic guns. One very modern lift.

A Merlin Mk2 from 814 Naval Air Squadron airlifted 18 cannons from St Michael’s Mount on 14 October, taking them to Marazion for specialist restoration.

Salt spray had corroded the iron guns. Some weigh up to half a ton, and each travelled beneath the helicopter on its own.

For Atlantic Flight’s crew, it also put the same ship-to-shore lifting skills used at sea into practice while helping preserve a historic collection.

The guns will return to the Mount after conservation.

Britain’s only ice patrol ship came home on tugs.

Now HMS Protector’s future is uncertain.

HMS Protector has returned to Devonport under tow while the Royal Navy investigates a defect. The service says she remains part of the fleet; Navy Lookout reports that her future is uncertain, with no formal withdrawal decision announced.

She entered Royal Navy service in 2011 as a three-year chartered stopgap. The MoD bought her in 2013 for £54 million, and a 2019 propulsion defect later led to a £14 million, ten-month overhaul.

Protector does more than break ice. Her crews survey Antarctic waters, support research and carry out treaty inspections.

A replacement is planned, but Parliament was told on 15 September that both the procurement method and exact timeline would be decided “in due course”. The assumption had been that Protector would keep going until then.

The dream? To open a proper Jack Navy pub.
