Lost Shapes

Lost Shapes Formerly screen printing ethical clothing; now teaching and sharing my own projects in spare time. Punchy prints for people and places.

Lost Shapes is an ethical clothing company, selling fair wear certified, organic cotton and sustainable fabric tops hand printed with original designs. Every stencil is hand drawn, hand cut, and hand screen printed in the Lost Shapes studio, creating shapes and silhouettes with real warmth and impact. LOST SHAPES is me, Anna Brindle. I started off working from my garage studio in West Somerset - a

move to Devizes, Wiltshire saw an upgrade to an indoor studio with real daylight and warmth, but it's still all done by me. Lost Shapes sells from the website (only £2 for UK P+P!), at good quality artisan markets, and through independent and/ethical online shops.

Missed this one in my Green Man post, but I love it. Me and sister-in-law at that tired-but-happy Sunday point of festival. About to watch Lambrini girls I think.

Van update, for those who care
I posted about my van last year when I completed the basic construction with the boxes and drawers, but never followed with soft furnishings and accessories.
New additions this year are cutlery storage from an old folder and curtain hooks I made from a bit of aluminum and pop-riveted to the van. Everything except the hooks is fully removable (we use it as a van or 9 seater too sometimes), but it was driving me crazy when the curtains didn't stay up.
All fabric vintage from Sheffield junk shops (thanks ), except the centre cushion with kind gift of seconds from , and blackout curtains from IKEA fabric.

One of this half term's sewing projects was experimenting with 4way stretch swimsuit fabric - I've never really used it and got some dead stock very cheap so thought I'd have a play. Managed to create this top for Eliza from scratch in afternoon - including making up pattern - based on something she saw in UO but a) cheaper b) slightly more ethical and c) designed for shape rather than a clothes hanger.
Not perfect, need to work out hems, but quite fun.

Got these 3 books for my birthday and I have so many ideas now, it seems a shame to go back to work.
I was hoping for the first two, and they're not at all disappointing. I've started on a zero waste pattern already today and want to introduce my students to the concept too. I hadn't come across - my sister found it for me in - but excited to make some of the patterns.
I like my job a lot, but it is inconvenient how it gets in the way of making plans...

Lots of these taken from the garden roof of the university library. Amazing that gets to study in such an interesting city, and so good to finally see him there.

An early birthday present for Joe as we're visiting Warsaw and seeing him for the first time for 7 months.
Bag from self-drafted pattern I made 2 years ago for a bag for Bo (he's still using it, so it seems to work), using upholstery fabric samples and off-cuts. Added an extra pocket and gusset around the zip, in case anyone cares for the technical details.

Heirloom. Made this top for Bo's birthday from pillowcases that belonged to his Maltese great grandmother. (See last images for the original cases). They're hand embroidered with M and P, the initials of her maiden name, Maria Pace, so I think she probably made them when she was younger than him.
Pattern drafted by me, sleeves made from a hospital sheet, making use of the blue stripe selvedge.
He's also wearing the I made him for Christmas, looking good for 3 months hard washing and wearing.

A very different incarnation of the .no . I planned to make some lounge pants - something neutral and comfy, basically a pair of trackies. But I really like the way the studio pants are made, so decided to go with them, and then saw this old vintage duvet that I had, and thought why go to the effort and make something boring... and somehow they're not trackies at all. But I'm lounging in them quite happily.
I made it simple by cutting out the fly (definitely the hardest part) and outside pockets, and they were quite a quick make. Kept the leg darts and topstitching because I like them, and seam pockets because they're essential.

Managed to squeeze in making these trousers between end of term and Christmas Eve - I saw the pattern when .maker made it and knew it would be perfect for a present for Bo. It's almost zero waste (see last couple of pics), and the only printed pattern is the pocket, which also becomes the crotch curve. I love how constructional it is - lots of 3D elements like the darts at the hem (also like the bias tape hem, hence turn-up to show you!). I made them out of dead stock denim from but you could make a fantastic multicoloured pair from remnants because of the knee seam and the fact it's mainly lots of rectangles. Hoping to make some more with fabric I screen-print myself some day.
Pattern by .no
Sewn on my very old Bernina sewing machine and newer Janome over locker.
