Correct heel-to-toe drop:

Heel-to-toe drop, the difference in height between the heel and forefoot (usually 0-12mm), is central for managing impact, influencing foot-strike patterns, and shifting mechanical stress between joints.

Key Points for importance:

• Understanding your Biomechanics/ Running Style: There is no single “correct” drop, but rather one that fits your comfort, strike pattern and avoids recurring injuries.

• Impact Redistribution: Lower drops are shown to shift load to the calves and Achilles, while higher drops move it to the knees and hips.

• Foot Strike Alignment: Generally, higher drops assist heel-strikers, while lower drops favour midfoot/forefoot strikers.

• Injury Prevention: Choosing the right drop can alleviate specific pain; for instance, those with knee issues might prefer lower drops, while those with calf/Achilles issues often prefer higher ones.

• Transitioning: It is important to gradually adapt to new, lower-drop shoes.

Consideration:

• Gait Analysis: An opportunity to learn more about your running style, what you can do to improve it and which trainers are likely to be the best fit for you. You’ll also get the opportunity to try on different pairs of running shoes for comparison.

Correct level of cushioning:

Finding the right balance between comfort and stability is key to avoiding injuries and maximizing performance. Appropriate cushioning can prevent common injuries such as plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, and knee pain, allowing for a safer and more enjoyable activity experience.

Key Points for importance:

• Shock Absorption: Midsoles are a barrier between the foot and the ground, therefore sufficient cushioning reduces the stress placed on tendons, bones, muscles, and joints. Research has shown that during running, the ground reaction force is approximately 3 x body weight, with your calf muscles taking up to 8 x your body weight.

• Injury Prevention: Cushioning is essential for preventing over-use injuries and reducing strain on the knees, hips, and lower back.

• Impact Management for Heavier individuals: Individuals with higher body weight benefit from increased cushioning to better manage the higher force exerted on their joints.

• Surface Type: On hard, unforgiving surfaces like concrete, enhanced cushioning is necessary for reducing impact and therefore injuries. However, on softer surfaces, such as fields, less cushioning may provide more ground feel and responsiveness.

Levels of Cushioning:

• Maximum Cushioning: Intended for maximum shock absorption, ideal for longer distances, heavier individuals or those needing extra protection.

• Moderate Cushioning: Can offer a balanced blend of protection and responsiveness, suitable for a wide range of people and various distances.

• Light Cushioning: Provides a more direct feel of the ground and more stability.

Correct fitting trainers can:

• Prevent Injuries/ Foot Problems:
Accurately fitted trainers have been seen to prevent conditions such as plantar fasciitis, ingrown toenails, calluses, and bunions.

• Provide Stability and Support:
When the feet are secure in a trainer, it provides more stability due to less foot movement and slipping within the trainer.

• Improve Performance:
An accurate fit, particularly with adequate support, prevents discomfort and allows for natural foot transition which can make your activities more enjoyable and efficient.

• Enable Comfort:
The right size will accommodate for the individuals foot shape. Furthermore, catering for foot swelling during exercise and allowing enough space in the toe box to prevent blisters, numbness and pain.

Key Considerations:

• Size: Toes are not too close or far away from the toe box.

• Width: The ball of the foot should fit comfortably in the widest part of the shoe.

• Heel Lockdown: The heel should have no slipping or sliding, yet not too tight.

•Function: The trainer can account for the activity, i.e catering for the amount of potential foot swelling.
