Rivers are a major source of plastic pollution in the oceans.

The Ocean Cleanup estimate that 1000 rivers are accountable for nearly 80% of global annual riverine plastic emissions, which range between 0.8 – 2.7 million metric tons per year, with small urban rivers amongst the most polluting. The remaining 20% of plastic emissions are distributed over 30,000 rivers.

Using The Ocean Cleanup's interactive map https://theoceancleanup.com/sources/ and focusing in on Cornwall, estimates are provided for how much plastic enters the ocean from local rivers.

By preventing littering, and carrying out litter picks, we contribute to reducing the amount of plastic that enters our oceans.

Yesterday, we visited the new mural at Newquay train station on Cliff Road, and it's absolutely stunning! The colours are so vibrant and the artwork is fantastic.

As surfers let’s help protect the marine and beach environments 🤙

Simple ways to protect the ocean. After your session, grab at least 3 pieces of trash on your way back up the beach. If you don’t, it will likely end up in the lineup. Taking this small action will leave the ocean better than you found it.
