Tourism Teesside (formerly Trashterpiece) is intended to reimagine and celebrate the forgotten histories of Teesside in the North East of England. Through redesigning key brands and iconography Tourism hopes to reinvigorate a sense of pride in our region, one t-shirt at a time. Kingsley Chapman is a Stockton-on-Tees based artist and musician who is passionate about redefining Teesside - the area i

n the North East of England which he grew up in and currently lives and works. He studied Fine Art at Cleveland College of Art and Design in Hartlepool, University College Salford and Sheffield Hallam University before embarking on a career as the front man in art rock bands THE CHAPMAN FAMILY (2006-2013), KINGSLEY CHAPMAN AND THE MURDER (2014-2017) and BENEFITS (2019-present), a venture which saw him perform in places as far flung as Texas and Tokyo as well as feature in publications like NME and Artrocker, and appear on MTV and BBC national radio stations.

Happy Sunday everyone! Wipe away you Eurovision tears and check out this BRAND NEW Tourism Teesside tee celebrating the legendary Arena nightclub in Middlesbrough in the 90s.

In the 90s the Arena resurrected itself from the ashes of the iconic punk venue the Rock Garden to become a northern powerhouse superclub, equally as famous for its indie nights as well as its dance ones - occasionally criss crossing the two, merging everything into a giant ecstatic multi layered party. Lemon h***h and Metz clagged to the dancefloor.

The design is a reimagining of a flyer for an amazing gig featuring 808 State and Moby in February 1993. Available in S/M/L/XL/XXL, white and grey print on dark grey tees, £15 each.

Away from the t-shirts we're currently involved in a project about celebrating the historic music and culture of Stockton-on-Tees. Can you help? Do you have a favourite gig you went to in the town? Or a street performance at the Stockton International Riverside Festival that sticks in your brain? Did you see Carter USM at the Dovecot in the 80s? Or the man on the high wire going across the High Street in the 90s? Or maybe you even went to see one of the greatest bills for a show Stockton has surely ever seen: The Supremes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Stevie Wonder and Georgie Fame at the Globe on April 2nd 1965? Maybe you saw the Amazing Spacefrogs at the Sun Inn.

We've got a seemingly endless list of acts and performers that have performed in a High Street venue over the years from the mid 1800s to present day but I might have missed something off. Please let us know your favourite.

208 Newport Road is an amazing place. Opening in 1913 The Pavilion Theatre soon became the Pavilion Picture House, operating as a cinema up until 1960. Then it became Club Marimba in the 60s, famously a punk and metal Mecca in the mid 70s and 80s, a pioneering house and Britpop venue in the 90s, and a rock and roll den in the 00s before going back to dance.

On this site we've concentrated on the Rock Garden era but it's also worth acknowledging the time it rejuvenated itself and became a vital place to be for a new generation in the 1990s. The list of iconic names to play during this time from rave to house to indie is staggering: Oasis, Adamski, A Guy Called Gerald, Beautiful South, 808 State, Moby, Kirsty MacColl, Graeme Park, Roger Sanchez, Mike Pickering, D:Ream, Paul Oakenfold, Carl Cox, Apollo 440, M People, Catatonia, Space, Ce Ce Penniston, Senser, Kula Shaker, Chumbawamba, Sheep on Drugs, Atari Teenage Riot, Dubstar, Placebo and many more, not forgetting the incredible amount of amazing Teesside bands that also played as support or as headliners themselves.

Did you go to a gig at the Arena in the 90s? What was your favourite?

Buildings come, buildings go. They're planned, built, used, left to rot, then they get demolished and finally they get replaced ...sometimes. This is the site of the old Coatham Bowl on Majuba Road, (also known as the Redcar Bowl), demolished in 2014 and left in this state ever since.

In that bit of weeded over wasteland genuine music legends performed (albeit on a stage and not in some tatty bit of dirt). Daltrey swung his mic, David Coverdale brought Whitesnake back home, Ozzy rocked up in 88, and Poly Styrene gave Teesside a dose of groundbreaking punk with X Ray Spex.

Check out our tee tribute to the place (about the time Iggy Pop played there in 1979...yeah really!) here: https://tourismteesside.bigcartel.com
