Did you know that Shetland has its own subspecies of wren?

Troglodytes troglodytes zetlandicus is bigger than the Eurasian wren (Troglodytes troglodytes).

A new study looks at why our wrens have diverged from the flock and how islands are 'natural laboratories for understanding evolution'.

A new study of Shetland Eurasian Wrens reveals how island isolation drove the evolution of larger body size, shedding light on rapid changes in bird populations.

It’s always a treat to visit the Fine Art degree shows at UHI Shetland.

This year is particularly special for us because Emma Eunson – a member of the Nielanell team – is graduating with a BA (Hons).

Emma’s work examines how memories are formed, revisited and altered over time. Images 1-3 here are from her exhibition; subtle and thoughtful pieces in a range of media.

“Perhaps objects do not merely decorate our lives, they absorb them. They stand quietly in the liminal space between past and present, between remembering and forgetting. Even when we move on, they remain, holding stories we many not yet know we will need.”

Emma’s show has been recognised with a Society of Scottish Artists New Graduate Award and a Shetland Arts Exhibition Prize.

Our congratulations to all graduating artists.

The exhibition continues until Friday 19 June.

4: Estella Smith
5: Tayla Hanks
6: Susan Linklater

7-10: UHI Shetland is also showing diverse work by students from a range of creative programmes.

---

A little bit of history...

Our first introduction to Emma came through her involvement in V&A Dundee's Scottish Design Relay. Between 2017 and 2018, this innovative project encouraged Scotland’s young people to engage with their local design heritage.

Shetland’s contribution to the Relay – led by designer Niela Nell Kalra of Nielanell and artist Amy Gear – saw nine young Shetlanders collaborate on a collection of knitted accessories.*

The finished pieces were shown, alongside work by young people from across Scotland, as part of V&A Dundee’s inaugural exhibition programme in September 2018.

Shortly after the Relay, in early 2019, Emma joined our team at the Nielanell studio. She has been a valued member ever since.

We are so proud of her!

*The project was facilitated locally by Shetland Arts and designer Leanne Fischler for V&A Dundee.

A new blue.

Shoormal scarves and capes are now in stock, in a new colourway: shaela blue with moonlit sand.

Shaela is a Shaetlan word for blueish grey. In Katie's family, shaela is also a particular type of mist that settles in the evening... the kind you don't want to descend on your washing!

Our new shaela blue is definitely more blue than it is grey, but it does have a misty quality that is familiar from observing our surroundings.

And there are echoes of the colours you can see on the beach here in Hoswick.

Our full Shoormal collection will follow in this new colourway. In addition to scarves and capes, we make wraps and two styles of jumper (standard length plus longer line tunics).

Thank you to Jayne for this lovely photo taken at Shetland Croft House Museum, just after a visit to Hoswick.

Jayne's citriney yellow hat is from our neighbours Shetland Woollen Company. Her jumper is one of our Smookies.

A very local outfit! Both pieces of knitwear were made in our peerie Shetland village (less than ten miles from the museum).
