More stash busting while trying out some different techniques when winding warps. Always best to start with something small like a scarf and build up to blankets. Both scarves are all wool.

I’ve been diving into my yarn stash in a probably vain attempt at reducing it. It feels like I’m making some progress though and I love these three mohair shawls. String and fluffy string turned into a warm hug. Amazing isn’t it?

So my new rabbit hole has been learning to crochet. Huge thanks to the amazingly patient Magdalena and for the lessons, the coffee and the chat. I’ve a long way to go but I’m definitely getting to grips with it and using up leftovers as well.

Something old - a tablet woven band that’s been on the go for the best part of two years. The craft though is ancient and the way pattern appears as you turn the cards back and forth seems like magic. My technique needs a bit of work but it’s not bad for a first attempt.

I spent a lovely afternoon yesterday with some really chilled out weaving while catching up on podcasts. Fascinating listening even if you aren’t textile obsessed. Today I’ll be winding some more warps. I like to have a stash of them ready to go so there is always something to wind on without having to do the planning and the brain work first.

So far so good. The only hitch was the blue dye splashed up the kitchen wall……….which we’ll never speak of again 😉

Despite promising myself I would spend the down time between Christmas and New Year finishing projects rather starting new ones…. I just couldn’t help myself. So many lovely new books from Santa and a new loom too. This is my first attempt at ikat weaving. The book tells me to use cotton and indigo (which I don’t have) so wool and acid dyes it is then. Oh, and I’ve just discovered the strips of plastic I used for the tying are actually that biodegradable not plastic. What can possibly go wrong?

So that’s a wrap…. or not, depending on which way you look at it. This year I decided to go a wee bit more eco and ban wrapping paper for presents to each other. Reusable draw string bags are the way to go so I’ve used all sorts of odds and ends, some of which I’ve had for years. Finally it’s feet up with a G&T time.
Wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and peaceful 2023. See you on the other side.

Our Christmas tree is up. I’ve made a new tree decoration pretty much every year for the last 34 years so dressing our tree is like a trip down memory lane. It also means we need quite a large tree and a colour coordinated Christmas is never going to happen. The first picture is 2022’s rabbit hole showing an eco printed fern on silk with some embroidered embellishments. (The embroidery is pretty ropey if I’m honest but it does the job.) The other pictures are just some of my favourites. They all represent a move or other major life event. Deciding what to make and what to use is the fun part. The end result often depends on how much time I have. Some definitely don’t deserve a photograph. 🙄

It’s cold out there tonight so that’s a cosy night in with Pizza, a Christmas movie and some finishing off to keep my hands busy.

Can you guess what I was doing over the weekend? Christmas has arrived at The Five Turrets.
