Yes it takes a while to do a whole hemline.... but this is one of the easier and more mindful tasks in the studio.... so can be welcomed respite from the more technical jobs.
An hemline shouldn't shed its beads when heading down the aisle! 😮

Toiling!
First week back at LeannMarieDesign is done!... and the 2026 year is opening with a bespoke project 💕

Bespoke production is personal to your own measurements. This is not made-to-order like a boutique purchase. Bespoke is made-to-measure and a bespoke gown will not need alterations after it has been made.

This is because the fitting work and the design refinements are achieved before your gown is even made, through a drafting and toiling process. This involves using your measurements to create a draft and series of flat-patterns. Followed by a mock-up series of 2 or 3 dress toiles in calico or muslin. These mock-ups are used to establish the perfect fit before we cut your precious bridal cloth.

At LeannMarieDesign, we only accept two gown projects per year. But we also teach this process at Trent University and to other professionals for their own career development.

If you're wondering about how this process works as bride or a professional, fire us some questions and get curious! 😘

Last chance to book!
LeannMarieDesign is delighted to announce that we are once again running our intermediate drafting course.... this time in Sheffield! We have just three spaces left available! And it starts this Friday :)

Please contact me on 07960 726 591 /
[email protected] if you have questions or wish to reserve a space.

This course will provide four days of in-person practical content and hands-on delivery that includes silhouette development, sleeve adaptations and circular-cutting. Independent homework tasks will also be provided. All inclusive at £455.

This is a follow-on to the Beginners Pattern Drafting & Cutting Course. An intermediate and more creative course - 'Creating Shape and Volume'.

This is suitable for people who have attended a prior pattern drafting course, with myself or elsewhere, and already have a personalised draft or block that fits. Also suitable for people that work with ready-made blocks. It is especially suitable for degree and masters students and for professionals looking to expand their skill set. And also for confident home-sewists looking to take their work to the next level. You should therefore have a fair knowledge of clothes assembly. Just so that you can assemble the patterns that you generate.

This is a four day course and is split into day-pairs. Two-days teaching followed by a 14 day break for independent sewing/learning time. Followed by two-days of further teaching.

The advantage of this 'gapped' delivery is that it removes any time pressure. You will be doing lots of work in the sessions but will also be given independent homework tasks. The two week gap means that you have time to stop, rest, reflect, repeat, correct and explore the independent work.

The course will be held at the The Burton Street Foundation , home to iconic scenes from the film 'The Full Monty'. Classes start Friday 21st November 10am-4pm.

Get in touch if this is what you've been looking for!

Let's talk sleeves.... They can be a fabulous add-on duo to create a more versatile look for your gown..... and they don't necessarily have to be sewn in. They can be removable. They don't need to be full length either. We love these frilly capped sleeves that Eleanor brought to us with her gown.

When paired with other accessories such as a veil or a belt, this allows the bride to create different aesthetics for different parts of the big day, which can be a lot of fun to style.
Sleeve additions may come with your bridal gown, but if not, they can be purchased as separates or can be made to order by a couturier or possibly your specialist x

Lets talk beaded gowns :) We love them! Designers like specialise in beauties like these. And our bride Beverly could not resist when she found this piece in a sample sale... she jumped at the chance to snap up this British designer. And we don't blame her!
Beadwork is one of the most luxurious and timeless types of surface embellishment.

But when it comes to , it's also one of the most expensive. Before alterations start, the relevant areas are stripped down to free up the fabric surface for seam and machine access. Once alterations are complete, those beads are then returned by hand, with pattern matching.

This gown arrived to us 3-4 sizes too big. 10cm was removed out of the centre-back alone and, additional to the significant downsizing across multiple seams, the godet-inserted train was removed and capped sleeves were later added. With such large areas of removal, the beadwork design then needed adapting so that the pattern could still match and make visual 'sense' when the beads were returned. As a used boutique sample, it also needed the typical areas of repair and a full cleaning service.
Overall, this gown took more than 48hrs to downsize and return her to a flawless finish.

If choosing a beaded gown, make sure that your bridal seamstress is familiar with the required techniques at the time of booking.

"Hi Leann, thank you so much for all the work you and your team put into the alterations for my wedding dress. It was absolutely PERFECT. The comments that were made about the attention to the detail and your work...., I felt so proud on your behalf. Everyone was absolutely wowed by it! Even more so when I told them of how it had been transformed with your incredible talent. I felt very special in it...., thank you so much. Xx"

Let's talk horsehair...... sometimes known as 'crin'. This is often used on wedding gowns to create a more structured hemline with a bit of 'body' and kick. It is often used for a more relaxed and softer silhouette than what a hoop or net filling would provide.
These days, it's made from plastic mesh tape rather than horsehair, but it takes its nickname 'crin' from its earlier use in Victorian crinolines.

love the stuff, as featured in this beautiful floral appliqued example. Due to the plastic mesh being clear, it can now be used in translucent fabrics like tulle, which makes it even more versatile for modern use in bridal gown production.

Shortening a horsehaired hem takes time, though, as it must be unpicked before hemming can start. It should not be cut through nor overlocked. If your own gown features this detail, ensure that you check whether your is familiar with the required techniques at the time of booking.
