Sea grapes, cocoplumbs ,guineps, tamarind, almond, guava, mango, soursop, june plumb, pawpaw, cherry, coconut….sorry for those of you I have missed but likely you made up a piece of me.

I was lucky to grow up In what was my garden of Eden, surrounded by trees, bushes, shrubs that gave and gave and I loved them all well.

We came back to England, I was bereft, the land felt cold. Where to meet those generous ones, how to taste this place.
Then I met blackberry, I learnt her ways in thorny thickets tattered and torn, to find her soft sweetness. She showed me her kin too and things began to change.

Today i headed to the hills to forage the snaked boundaries and found the sweetest most perfect berries to fill my basket. Inked hands full of joyful fiddle, not a scratch, not a drop of blood as exchange.

Forage wide my friends, teach the young ones, fill your freezer, make vinegars and syrups for sore throats and warm wintery cordials. Some places have blueberries we have abundant blackberries. They have thrived through this hot summer.

And so many subspecies it’s hard to tell them apart but you can taste them in their fruits; some perfumed, sweet, sour, big small but don’t wait until after 29th September St Michaels day. When the devil fell from heaven and landed on a blackberry bush. In rage he spat a curse to ruin the fruit. Later fruits taste bad and may be fly blown so it does sound right. And then we have the stories of brambles hunting sheep ?

Praise be to blackberry in all her guises - protector, nourisher, resilient one, dragon, feeder, hunter , explorer friend, home.

Find clean spots and above the dog wee line .

I walked with a heavy heart this evening seeing the drought set in and reach so many trees . The hawthorn and elder especially near me are suffering, may they survive may enough of you survive was all I could pray. The sky scarred what are we doing ?

Gathered seeds to grow and buoyed myself up this morning with the sight that some hawthorn although not so berried are doing ok and it’s raining 🙌

I found another beautiful green elder today.

A old variant of Sambuca nigra. Prized I believe by some Sweeter berries but they don’t contain the same anthocyandins that make black elder. That are so helpful in fighting viruses~like cyanidin-3-glucoside that binds directly to viruses neutralising them and stopping them from entering healthy cells but it does still contain Agglutinins the lectins that prevent the virus from hooking onto a host cell membrane.

I also like their names - Sambucus nigra viridis Viridis or Greenbeere

Thinking a lot about elder and that gifts they share 🙏. started getting orders for my elderberry syrup so have been out gathering from my patches. Many of the trees have been suffering in the heat so have been gathering a little from the trees with berries to spare. The harvest feels ok this year but hawthorn seems much less berries.

when I am feeling full of courage whizzing down a hill on my bike. Free to wonder as I wander. To contemplate with hops and whoever else I encounter . noticing their becoming from tiny luminesce green tentacles of light, to dropping strobiles in layers upon layers . I feel a tingle of bliss, of Eden and it carries me to thoughts of writing and hops not being the remedy for those who suffer with melancholy, the virtues of other helpful plants allies .

In this freedom place my son comes to mind and I smile remembering him joking and saying with a smile “ I do what I want “ . Right now so do I son and it feels great .

In her extensive treatment of melancholy, she never even hints at the possibility that the melancholic soul is guilty for its dejected state. It seems obvious to us not to accuse a depressed person for her condition, but Hildegard’s matter-of-fact attitude was not so common in religious circles at all. Stating that everybody is a sinner did not mean to her that people should feel diminished by this information, but only that people are all sick and must be appropriately cured, since the original balance of the Edenic state has been lost.
