What thickness do I need for a silver metal clay ring? That’s a question I get asked quite often

For example, my tiny frog 🐸 ring, which I’ll add a link to (if you can’t see the link, please scroll back through my grid) is 1.5mm thick, which is equivalent to 6 playing cards thick

For textured rings, add more depth so that the texture stands out. I’d recommend 2-3mm for heavily textured ring bands

For setting gemstones into a ring band, the thickness will need to be greater than the depth of the gemstone. Otherwise, your stone will drop out!

Silver metal clay >> TOP TIP on making your own gemstone bezel settings. Use tiny cutters to cut out your bezel shape and make sure your clay is deep enough for the stone. It needs to sit below the surface so that when the clay shrinks during firing, it holds the stone in place, and it won’t drop out!

Are these torch fireable gemstones? TOP TIP >> the only way to tell is to test them before you set them into your silver metal clay

I use CZs because they’re manmade to withstand the heat. CZs, or cubic zirconia, were made to replicate diamonds. You can buy them quite cheaply and in lots of different colours, making them the perfect gemstone to fire directly in the clay

3 FACTS ABOUT CUBIC ZIRCONIA
+ A CZ is actually 75% heavier than a real diamond!
+ A CZ reflects more rainbow light “fire” than a natural diamond does
+ While it exists in nature, it’s so rare that almost every piece you see is lab-grown
