We at In Car Safety Centre recently spent time diving deep into the VTI Swedish Plus Test safety standards—and for , we’re sharing exactly why it matters for your family. 🇸🇪👇

If you aren't familiar with VTI (the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute), they are the masterminds behind the toughest car seat crash test in the world. Unlike standard European testing, the Plus Test measures the catastrophic neck load forces on a child during a frontal impact.

Testing is so strict that no forward-facing seat has ever passed it.

Our time studying these precise safety mechanics is why we proudly champion brands like BeSafe. BeSafe shares our obsession with Extended Rear-Facing (ERF) protection, engineering seats that shield a child's fragile neck and spine up to 7 years old.

When you visit us, you aren’t just buying a seat—you’re getting the exact data-driven safety advice we study at the highest levels.

Axkid Up™ is designed to grow with your child from 100–150cm, helping position both smaller and older children optimally for the vehicle’s safety systems.

With the market’s lowest forward-facing seating position and optimal seat belt positioning across the hips, Axkid Up™ continues to provide protection all the way up to 150cm.

Because child safety shouldn’t stop when they grow.

Should the Swedish Plus test affect your choice of car seat? In our opinion, it absolutely should. Yet, only 19% of UK parents have even heard of it. But when they do? 89% say it plays a significant role in their decision. While it is the toughest crash test in the world, we believe passing the Plus test should be mandatory for manufacturers. After all, a child’s safety in traffic should never be compromised.

➕ Only rear-facing car seats can pass the Plus Test.
➕ Plus-tested car seats ensure a child’s neck is protected.
➕ Despite its importance, the Plus Test is completely voluntary for car seat manufacturers.

Why should children stay rear-facing beyond the age of 2yrs? According to EU legislation, children must travel rear-facing in a car until at least 15 months old. But in our latest report, Child Safety in Cars 2025, we found that 69% of children in the UK are forward-facing by the age of 2–3 – something we want to change. Since rear-facing is always the safest way to travel, we strongly recommend keeping children rear-facing for as long as possible.

Rear-facing is safer because:
👉 Offers superior protection for your child's head, neck, and spine during a collision.
👉 A 1yr old's head is 25% of their body weight, putting huge pressure on the neck when the head is thrown forward.
👉 Rear-facing seats spread the forces across a wider area, the child car seat, rather than a child's neck.

Keeping them rear-facing for longer ensures their safety in the car. 💛

Rear-facing car seats are one of the safest choices for children — yet many still turn them forward too soon due to common misconceptions:

❌ “There’s no legroom.”
❌ “They can’t see anything.”
❌ “It causes motion sickness.”

The truth? Kids are more flexible than adults, love changing leg positions, and actually get a better view when seated higher. And motion sickness usually comes from things like heat or hunger — not the direction they’re facing.

What other reasons have you heard for skipping rear-facing? Let’s clear them up 👇
