Long time, no post!

My latest make is a commission for splash-proof cushions and covers for bean bag chairs. I was lucky to have been gifted an old, unusable main sail a while ago so, I set up work cutting it down to size!

My poor domestic machine did its best. Some of the work is not the tidiest and hand sewing this material was really hard on the fingers. But, I am happy to report, that I have fulfilled the brief at zero waste and zero cost - I even reused HelloFresh cold packaging for the cushion wadding.

The dog didn’t get left out of the new coat sewing sessions this week. I picked up this wool skirt by Jigsaw for less than a pound at a charity shop. I had to re-straighten the bias cut and then quilted the lining to the bouclé. The quilting batting was purchased as a remnant and lighter than I would like.

Self-drafted a few rectangles based on length, girth and chest measurements. The coat is secured by a band underneath and secured with a few metal poppers.

It’s been hard to find a coat long enough for Jeff and now he has a posh Jigsaw one! Happy old boy! 🐶

8 Angel costumes complete!!

Would it have been easier with the overlocker? Maybe, but not having it made me think out of the box and come up with a different design, which I think I like better!

Simplicity 2856 for the white under garment & wings with a self-drafted tabard. All laundered and ready to go in time for this year’s nativity play!

I finally admitted defeat in fixing my overlocker myself. I just could not get the complicated timing of all the parts (upper looper, lower looper, needles & feed dogs) right. I will need to call a professional. The good news was I was able to get it back together, which was lucky!😅

So, armed with a straight and zigzag stitch, I have made 8 white base layers, only one of which is hemmed. So, that’s my next task. I have also decided on a new plan to use the generously donated gold fabric and will be doing some mock-ups after. 👼

If anyone knows a sewing machine repair person, feel free to leave their details in the comments!

It’s never good when you hear a sound from your sewing machine that goes “clunk”. My main drive gears have sheared off. I spent the morning disassembling the overlocker & have ordered replacement parts.

Keep your fingers crossed I can put it all back together again else, I shall have to get someone involved who knows and send them the pieces.

Getting back up and running after the summer break. A school was gifted 2 bin liners full of mystery golden fabric and asked if I could make some nativity costumes for the Reception children. A kindly neighbour donated some white sheets to make up the rest of the costumes & I found a second-hand pattern on a well-known selling site.

I have a LOT of scraps from cutting these shirts up. Today I’m experimenting with Bottlecap Bug cat toys. The legs are cut-off bottom hems and they are stuffed with smaller pieces of scrap fabric. Foster staff approve.

First finished objects from my shirt experiments. Postage stamp mug rugs!

I affixed 1.5 inch squares to light fusible interface and sewed quarter in seams by folding the fuses piece. I squared the blocks up and roughly cut wadding & backing fabric (one of the poly-blend shirt sleeves). Sewed the sandwich right sides together, turned and top stitched.

I think I need matching placemats with bigger squares, what do you think?

Then, I started on the shirt fronts, the sleeves, the yolks and finally, squared up the backs. I worked 1.5”, 2.5” and 5” squares & strips.

As you can see, notwithstanding the time it took, all my plans of selling these as simple cut fabric packs went out the window as my current foster-helpers “helped”. If these do get used to sell for human use, they will be laundered. But, I have a couple of plans for this fabric.

All in, I did get more efficient but was limited by the varied sizes. In retrospect, I gained less than I thought being careful in breaking these down. If I do this in future, I’d definitely do things differently.
