So here goes…
Someone once told is… if having a business was easy, everyone would do it.
The funny thing is after and during lockdown a lot of people did do it, and it just so happened it was our business they were doing. Making gifts became a pastime or a necessity for many and before you knew it personalised mugs were available from your next door neighbour and printed tops started popping up everywhere. RIVA gifts was no longer as unique as we once thought…
We can truly say we didn’t think we’d be sat here 5 years ago writing this post but all good things must come to an end at some point.
It’s been the most wonderful, amazing, brilliant, stressful, eye opening experience full of laughs, surprises, astonishment and many many tears (good and bad) We have been pushed and pulled to every limit imaginable. From starting around the kitchen table making handmade baubles placing each individual confetti piece inside of them to achieving the unimaginable and setting up a 4m2 pop up shop in one most famous department stores in the country, I don’t care what anyone says that is greatness! We achieved greatness and we achieved it together! The sad part of this is - like I said earlier all good things must come to an end (only we didn’t think it would be a worldwide lockdown) after the UP of our Christmas pop up came the DOWN and the constant struggle to keep money in the bank, to keep the women working for us in a job and it didn’t happen… before we knew it the day came when we had to look them in the eye and say we had to let them go - ‘I think that was the lowest part for us’
Things generally got worse from there, you could say we put on our big girl panties and tried and tried to get our s**t together… we pretty much sold everything in our unit to pay the bills, moved back to the kitchen table from the unit we’d fought so hard to keep and started again. We kept going and kept going and kept going but now the question has come up yet again… how long can we keep on going, trying to save something that is lost?
That day has sadly come.. We can no longer.
We have made the decision that RIVA Gifts and Your Own merch will both be closing from the end of June.
We can say deep from our core that we have loved every minute of these last 5 years and we have grown so much as people because of it.
I couldn’t of done it with out my right hand woman, my sole mate, my sister… she is my absolute world.
This may be the end of RIVA gifts but I can tell you now this is most definitely not the end for Gem & Tess
