All of my designs are named after people or places that hold meaning for me.
I’ve always been drawn to the idea that clothing can carry memory — quietly holding fragments of a person, a landscape, a feeling or a moment in time.
In many ways, Withnell is built from those connections.
A grandmother’s photograph. The Pennine landscape close to home.
Family names.
Memories that stay with us long after the moment has passed.

These things gently find their way into my work — not always literally, but through shape, feeling, texture and detail.
Every garment begins as an original design drafted in my Lancashire studio. I hand-draft each pattern, cut every piece individually and sew in small batches using traditional techniques and careful construction.

Working this way allows me to stay close to the process. To make slowly. To notice the small details. To create pieces that feel considered, honest and quietly enduring.
I think that’s why naming each piece matters to me so much.
They are not just garments.
They are small stories woven into cloth.

I believe a Withnell piece should earn its place.

Helen was designed slowly, considering movement, proportion, comfort and longevity. A piece intended to be reached for instinctively, worn repeatedly and lived in fully.
