Thick wax-hardened leather base, polymer clay and acrylic cabochon, antique brass corner details.

Stages of distressing the solid brass star concho for my Wasteland Ranger hat.
1. Original: too shiny, with lots of unnecessary details.
2. Sanded with a Dremel tool to remove the scrollwork.
3. Patinated with ammonia fumes; too dark and uniform.
4. Final result: rubbed with coarse steel wool and buffed with felt, then exposed to ammonia fumes again (for a short period).

It takes some guts to slash open your newly made hat... And sew it back.
