Ghana Government and the Rent Control Department must step up.
Almost every landlord is demanding 2 years advance. Some even ask for 3 years. If you can’t pay, you are told to look elsewhere — as if people have money hidden somewhere.
Let’s be honest.
The average government worker earns between GHS 2,000 – 3,500 a month. Yet landlords are demanding GHS 30,000 to 40,000 upfront.
How?
Are we magicians? Are we printing money? Are salaries rising at the same speed as rent?
The law (Rent Act 1963, Act 220) does not support excessive advance payments, yet enforcement is almost invisible.
Meanwhile, ordinary workers are:
1. Taking loans
2. Emptying savings
3. Living under pressure
Or
4. settling for poor housing conditions
This is not sustainable.
Housing is not a luxury. It is a basic human need.
We need:
Proper enforcement of rent laws
Affordable housing projects
Salary adjustments that reflect the cost of living.
Because if salaries remain the same and rent keeps rising, where exactly do you expect workers to sleep?
Let’s talk about real solution.
