Welcome once again Mommies, Daddies and Caregivers to Nappy Rash Series!

PART THREE: TREATMENT AND PREVENTION
What's the best way to treat nappy rash?
You can treat your baby's nappy rash yourself 🙌. The rash should clear up after three or four days. It's unlikely to bother your baby much.

Here’s how to treat your baby’s nappy rash:

1. Keep your baby clean and dry by changing her nappy frequently. Try to do it as soon as possible after she's wet or filled her nappy.
Clean your baby's bottom using fragrance-free and alcohol-free baby wipes (check the label) or a mild, moisturising soap. Rinse your baby's bottom in plain water and pat her skin dry.

2. Give your baby as much nappy-free time as possible during the day, to allow the air to aid healing. Lay her on a towel in a warm room. If your baby is old enough to move around, put her down in a room with an easy-to-clean floor. If it’s warm enough, you could take her outside.

3. Apply a thin layer of barrier cream or ointment before putting on a clean nappy. There's no need to cake on the cream. Just use a small amount and rub it in enough so you can clearly see your baby’s skin. The cream is a protective layer between your baby's skin and any wee and poo.

4. A bath a day at the most should be enough to keep your baby clean. Use a mild baby cleanser or bath emollient added to the water to wash your baby. Be aware that bath emollient will make your baby slippery to handle in the bath.

5. You could switch to a super-absorbent disposable nappy to try to restrict the amount of moisture next to your baby’s skin. However, there’s no solid proof that disposable nappies are better than cloth nappies for treating or preventing nappy rash.

If your baby's nappy rash is the result of an allergy, the problem should clear up on its own, as long as you don't use the product that set off the rash.

Finally we've come to the end of a very informative series. I hope you've learnt as much as I have? Watch out for another interesting episode on baby and mother care.

Hallo once again Mummies and Pops! Welcome to the second episode of the Nappy Rash Series!

PART TWO: Causes of Nappy Rash?

The main cause of nappy rash is wetness from contact with wee and poo in a nappy. Newborns we**ee often and do frequent, runny poos.

Even the most absorbent nappy leaves some moisture on a baby's delicate new skin. This makes it harder for your baby's skin to work as a barrier, making it more likely that her skin will become irritated.

A baby left in a dirty nappy for too long is more likely to develop nappy rash. However, it can also strike the bottoms of babies with particularly sensitive skin, even if they have frequent, fresh nappies!😧😉

The reaction between wee and poo compressed together in a nappy can be particularly bad for your baby's skin😱. A bout of diarrhoea can make your baby more prone to nappy rash. That's because poo is spread over a wider area, and is wetter than usual.

Occasionally, other things can cause nappy rash. Your baby may have an allergic reaction to a product that has touched her skin. This is called allergic dermatitis, but it's rare for a baby to get it.

Allergic dermatitis could be triggered by a different brand of nappy, or a new cleanser or baby wipe. Sometimes it's obvious what the cause is, as the rash develops immediately after you've changed to a new product.

NAPPY RASH: THE THREE (3) PART SERIES

Nappy rash is very common in babies, particularly when they're between nine months and 12 months old. So, at some stage of parenthood, you're likely to unwrap your baby's nappy and be confronted with a rather tender-looking bottom. It can happen regardless of you using washable or disposable nappies.

PART ONE
What does Nappy Rash look like?

If your baby has nappy rash, you'll know it. His/ Her skin will look red and inflamed where it's been in close contact with her nappy. The rash will probably affect the ge****ls, the outer skin on the folds of her thighs, and her bottom. The affected areas can appear either dry or moist. It may sometimes look shiny or pimply.

If nappy rash isn't treated, it can develop into something more serious, including:
A. A yeast infection, such as thrush or candida. A yeast infection is more common in babies taking antibiotics.

B. A bacterial infection. Your baby may have a fever, and the infection usually causes oozing yellow patches or pus-filled pimples.

BABY NAPPIES BABY CARE: PERFECT THE ART OF NAPPY CHANGING

One of the most fundamental baby care basics to mastering the nappy-changing technique. Try these mum-tested tips to streamline or improve the nappy-changing process.

1. Preparation makes perfect
Minimise the time your baby will have to be uncomfortable by keeping all the necessary changing goods (nappies, wipes, bags for dirty packages) close to hand.

2. Double up
A great trick that some mums use to catch any unexpected spillage is to place a clean nappy underneath their baby before removing the dirty one. Any methods to limit the mess are always good to consider.

3. Chat him/ her up
Tell your baby what you're doing – hearing your voice will keep him calm and distract him from what's happening. Changing time can actually be great bonding time too. Instead of thinking of nappy changes as an unpleasant chore, slow down, take a breath and start a conversation with your baby.

4. Make it fun
Entertain your baby while putting on a fresh nappy by placing something eye catching near his changing spot. A colourful toy, or one that sparkles or sings, makes for a good option.

With these smart strategies in place, you'll be able to make nappy duty less of a chore and more of a bonding experience for both you and your baby.
