BREAKING: Federal High Court Sentences IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu to Life Imprisonment.
The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, has sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment after convicting him on multiple counts of terrorism.
Kanu, a British-Nigerian citizen, was found guilty on all seven amended charges, including inciting violence through Radio Biafra broadcasts, directing attacks on security personnel, and enforcing disruptive sit-at-home orders in Nigeria’s South-East region.
Delivering the judgment on Thursday, November 20, 2025, Justice Omotosho described Kanu as an “international terrorist” whose actions led to loss of lives, destruction of property, and economic disruption. The court imposed life sentences on several counts (opting for life imprisonment instead of the death penalty sought by the prosecution), 20 years on one count, and 5 years on another—all to run concurrently.
The judge also ordered that Kanu be held in protective custody with restricted access to communication devices and forfeited his radio transmitter to the federal government.
The decade-long trial, marked by multiple adjournments, judge reassignments, and Kanu’s rearrest in 2021, has been highly controversial. 😢
