Do you know the differences in our fugu fabrics?("Fugu" or "Batakari"or "Pia'an" or "Lowagero") is the traditional handwoven smock from Northern Ghana. The texture and sizing vary a lot depending on where it’s made and what it’s for. Here’s the breakdown.

The texture comes down to the yarn, weave, and region:
Smocks made by our Dagomba brother is medium-thick, slightly coarse, sturdy. Softens with wear. Woven from cotton on narrow strip looms.Looks and feel exactly as the ones made by my brothers in Pusiga.Often plain or simple stripes. Everyday wear.
Smock fabrics made in Savelugu/Nanton are made tighter, smoother than Dagomba. Lightweight but durable. Finer cotton threads, more compact. Infact before we started importing threads from China ,threads were hand spinned by our grannies for weaving. It is popular for both daily and ceremonial.
Smocks made from Doboya comes with a lot of hard work because the hand spinned threads goes through several stages in colouration before it is woven, this gives it the authentic blue-black colour you see when washed. These are mostly woven in 3 and 4inches

Smock made from Wa and Bolga area are thinner, looser weave, more breathable Made for the hotter Upper East & West climate because of the use of the lighter cotton.(Present day weave gets you the harder fugu from these Region),ranging from 3inches 4inches 11inches and 15inches which is popular which is popular with our women.
Modernity in terms of the machine-loom and threads has our fugu from all these Regions in the North being uniform, very smooth, less texture and absolutely comfortable to wear. This is still handwoven from scratch.
If you see the smock fabrics can you tell where it was woven?😁😁😁I've been studying the fabric for years.🥰🥰
