Out of the 22 Indigo pits in Daboya, Ghana, we have restored one for our sampling, leaving 21 pits inactive.

In Daboya, Ghana, freshly dyed silk yarn transforms into a vibrant indigo blue.

The indigo dyers here mix dry Indigo leaves as balls, river water from the white Volta, Zata clay, and ash in the pits overnight before dyeing.

Traditionally, the women of Daboya preserve the dry indigo leaves for the pits.

Daboya Dyers work with wild indigo that is grown in the savanna region and cultivate their own indigo as well.

This pit was once abandoned and filled with waste before it was cleaned and restored.
