The Rich Man And Lazarus (Luke 16:19-21)
____________________________
The rich man has enough money to feed his dogs, but doesn’t even give crumbs for Lazarus. He has probably walked by Lazarus many times without even seeing him. Both Lazarus and the rich man die. Lazarus is safe in the “bosom of Abraham” and the rich man is not so lucky. The rich man can see Lazarus while he is suffering in the unending fire. He wants Abraham to send someone from the dead to warn his brothers about what the result of greed can be, but Abraham’s answer I find interesting. Abraham says, “If they don’t listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if one rises from the dead.” After Jesus rose from the dead and those who were witnesses to his resurrection reported it widely, but there were those who wouldn’t accept it. There are those who won’t accept it today. Over the years, there have been many people who have had experiences of both heaven and hell. People who have had these near death experiences have come away either almost sad that they did not die, they were so drawn to the light and love they felt, or they are prompted to change their lives because of the horror they felt, and the fear that they would spend eternity there. They were very happy to get a second chance. We like to believe that God will bring us to heaven no matter what; after all, he loves all of us. But, it’s not all up to God. God has given us love and support all our lives, but it is up to us to accept the gift. How do we do this? Follow Jesus’ law of love is the way. Being aware of the needs of others and doing what we can to change things. The rich man might not have been aware of Lazarus, but what of us? Are we aware of those around us? Do we close our eyes to the needs of the poor? This parable lets us know that we will be judged by our actions, or non-actions, and we should take the hint.

Prayer: Lord, you tell us in so many ways how

Let Us Go Up To The House Of God.
(Psalm 122:1-4)
___________________________
We may be glad to head for the House of God, but I can remember my children not always feeling any joy, especially as teenagers. The Israelites, on the other hand, were happy to have a place of worship, where they could give thanks to God for all the times that they had been rescued from enemy nations. In today’s world, most of us can worship God in safety and so we take it for granted. In Sweden last year, a Catholic church was undergoing renovations and needed a place to hold its services so the Lutheran church in Lund, Sweden, allowed the Catholic parish to hold its services until the renovations were complete. When churches have been damaged, other churches step up and help out. In all of these situations, people are very grateful and are happy for the opportunity to worship God. Why is it that the churches aren’t full every Sunday? One of my friends who was pastor of a Congregational church was thrilled when he finally had enough children, ten, so that they could put on a Christmas pageant. Ten children! Another of my friends, a Baptist minister, had to allow another denomination to rent his church in order to pay the utility bills. Many of the churches in my area have part time ministers who work multiple churches to earn enough money to feed their families. We are so complacent. And yet, any time a church closes, there is an outcry. How did this happen, people ask. Of course the answer is that people aren’t attending and they’re not supporting their churches. If we want to turn this around, then we need to be the people who are glad to go up to the house of God and give him praise and glory.

Prayer: Oh God, we say we love you and want to be with you but we are often complacent and take your presence for granted. Help us to show our love by spending time with you and your community of believers in your house of prayer and praise. Amen.

God Works Through Us All(Ezra 1:2-3)
____________________________
Cyrus was not Jewish, but recognized the power of God and let all those who had been captive and brought into exile in Babylon go back to Judah. Not only did he let them return but he returned to them all the gold and silver that Nebuchadnezzar had removed from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to Babylon and had placed in the house of his gods. This way they could rebuild the temple and fill it with their sacred vessels. Cyrus was open to the action of God within him. We forget that God can use any one of us to be his instrument of grace. Think about Gandhi and all the good he did in India and by extension to the world. While it is true that many of the people who work and have worked for justice, to advance the work of Jesus in the world have been Christian, many have not. Also, you don’t have to be famous or have an important position to be an instrument for God. We tend to know the names of some of these men and women such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mother Teresa of Calcutta, but we don’t know the names of the Chinese students who were gathered and/or killed in Tiananmen Square, or the civil rights activists in the South in the sixties, but we do know that God was present in their midst and not all of them were Christian. God is also working through us when we give witness in our neighborhoods and our workplaces with our words and our actions. Never think that God can’t work through you.

Prayer: Gracious God, you motivated your son Cyrus to free the Israelites to return to Judah and rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. Please motivate us to be better witnesses to your love and your goodness. Amen.

The Unjust Manager(Luke 16:10-11)
___________________________
We all know the story of the unjust servant. He had been stealing from his master and now he’d been caught. He decided to ingratiate himself with those who owed his master money so they would take care of him after he lost his job. His master commended him on his worldly wisdom, what today we might call “street smarts.” But dishonesty has a price. It is very hard for someone to trust those who are dishonest. The person who robs a bank, or embezzles money, probably stole from a parent of shoplifted first. People who are dishonest start out early, a few lies, a piece of candy stolen from a store, something minor, then they progress. Acquiring money can get to be a habit, as the parable of the dishonest manager points out. People often misquote the saying, “The love of money is the root of all evil.” They say, “Money is the root of all evil.” Money itself is not the problem; it’s the love of money. There are those who put money above family or friends, even above God. They have made money a god. Jesus concludes this passage with two statements that we need to pay attention to. “No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. You aren’t able to serve God and Mammon.” Greed is a terrible disease and has led men and women to do terrible things in pursuit of it. Money does not buy happiness, but the love of God does. We need to continue to follow the way of Jesus with truth and fidelity.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for pointing out the path we need to follow to achieve true riches, and with it, happiness. Amen.
