THORIKOS was a city in the south part of Ancient Attica and the mining center of Laureotica, where lead and silver was mined from Neolithic times and worked in the industrial quarter of the settlement.
Thorikos continued to be a place of wealth and importance for Athens during its golden period.
Next to the industrial part, in the heart of the city is cituated the theater of Thorikos, probably the most Ancient Greek Theatre, dating from c. 524-480 BC.
It is unique due to its shape which comprises an emigrated layout with an oval orchestra.
This special theatre, dedicated to art and social gatherings, was excavated by the American School of Classical Studies in 1886.
