Postfolk

POSTFOLK is the work of Maria-Olga Vlachou, a Greek art director & graphic designer who have become intrigued by the design potential of the motifs in Greek folk art. These motifs have formed part of the graphical lexicon of traditional Greek culture for many generations, but are now an object of mostly curatorial or antiquarian interest. POSTFOLK wants to unlock the potential that these wonderfu

l figures have for contemporary design by dislodging or dislocating the motifs from the aesthetic conventions that once defined them in order to render them afresh. It seeks to infuse these motifs with vibrant new colors in a bold palette and to arrange these elements in new ways. In short, POSTFOLK works to relocate these elements within a new visual context and physical form, most of all in the pure brilliant colors of silk-screen prints. I think of our work as digital handicraft, a kind of digital embroidery. In creating these figures pixel by pixel, i want to pay homage to the fine needlework of the countless women who stitched these figures in table runners and toppers, on pillowcases and coverlets, and in so doing literally inscribed figures of joy – a pair of peacocks, a couple in love, a bouquet of flowers – in the very fabric of domestic life. In the end, i want to revive this visual legacy and enable it to evolve, true to its origins but free of the constraints within which Greek folk art is ordinarily (re-)presented and better equipped to travel beyond the country that first nurtured it. In this sense, POSTFOLK is very much about the future of a past.

Το POSTFOLK είναι η δουλειά της Μαρίας Όλγας Βλάχου. Ελληνίδα art director & graphic designer, που εμπνεύστηκε από την σχεδιαστική δυναμική που έχουν τα μοτίβα της ελληνικής παραδοσιακής τέχνης. Μιας τέχνης που έχει παίξει ένα ρόλο κλειδί τόσο στην ιστορία όσο και στην κουλτούρα της Ελλάδας, ειδικά κατά τον τελευταίο ενάμισι αιώνα της τουρκοκρατίας.

Τα τεχνήματα αυτά, κεντημένα σε πολλά οικιακά αντικείμενα, κυριολεκτικά διακοσμούσαν την καθημερινή ζωή και έδιναν πιο ευτυχισμένους και αισιόδοξους τόνους στις μεγάλες δύσκολες περιόδους των οικονομικών αναταραχών. Αυτά τα μοτίβα έχουν μορφώσει ένα μεγάλο μέρος από το σχεδιαστικό λεξικό, της παραδοσιακής ελληνικής κουλτούρας.

Το POSTFOLK, έχει στόχο να ξεκλειδώσει τη δυναμική που κρύβουν μέσα τους αυτές οι θαυμαστές φιγούρες και να τις κάνει σημερινές.

Τελικός μου προορισμός, να αναγεννήσω την εικαστική και οπτική μας κληρονομιά. Να της επιτρέψω να εξελιχθεί, πιστή στις αρχές και την καταγωγή της, αλλά ελεύθερη από τα στενά όρια που συνήθως η ελληνική λαϊκή τέχνη αναπαραγάγει τον εαυτό της. Έτσι, σύγχρονα εξοπλισμένη, μπορεί πλέον να μεγαλώσει, να ζήσει και πέρα από την χώρα που την γέννησε και την ανέθρεψε.

Και είναι από αυτή την οπτική γωνία που το POSTFOLK είναι το μέλλον ενός πολύ δικού μας παρελθόντος.”
