If indigenous weavers in Guatemala value each other's work, why don't businesses?

A single huipil, the traditionally woven top Maya women have worn for generations, can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months to make. You can find used huipiles in Guatemala for as little as Q200 ($26). Why don't these handwoven pieces grow in value over time like other forms of art?

Our director Flory is a weaver herself, which means she understands what each piece truly requires. Together with the weaver, they determine a price based on an hourly wage, and nothing is finalized until the weaver feels confident in what they've quoted.

At Casa Flor Designs, our clients lean on us to make sure they're paying fairly. That accountability is something we take seriously on both sides of the table, and a conversation we are constantly having with the weavers we partner with.

Inspired by observations from our Director, Flory, and one of our most viewed interviews with her, we thought this subject deserved a more in depth look.

Master backstrap weavers hold incredible mathematic skills, passed down generationally.

It is so exiting to explore new designs along side them. Their skill makes custom design possible for our shared brand partners.

It's crucial we support the next generation of backstrap weavers in Guatemala. Not only to preserve a shared knowledge of the textile designs that are unique to each village, but also to carry on the practice as an artform and method of self expression.
juyu is a weaving school in San Antonio Aguas Calientes doing this important work. You can see 4 pieces made by young weavers from their school in our show room at in Antigua.

As a tourist, you can also take a backstrap weaving class with them!

Meet Don Felipe, Master Weaver in Guatemala

Here, he is weaving a textile for

Don Felipe is a master of many different handwoven floor loom techniques and has shared his knowledge with his children who work alongside him.

It is fascinating to watch him work. He has every pattern memorized. And even more impressive, he's weaving this fabric upside-down! What we see here is actually the back side of the fabric. It takes years of experience to ensure the face of the fabric doesn't have errors while he's weaving.
