Twenty years ago, Ben Klock was working a call centre, taking graphic-design gigs to pay rent, and just about ready to give up DJing for good.

He’d come up as a pianist, drifted through jazz, then made drum’n’bass - but by the early 2000s Berlin had gone all in on the “cocky cocaine” electroclash sound, and there was barely any room left for the deep, patient techno he cared about. He was, by his own account, ready to walk away.

Then in 2004 a new club opened in a hulking former power station, and invited him to be a resident. He played it once and knew he’d found the place he’d been looking for his whole life. That club was Berghain. His 2008 debut One, made in the wake of losing his mother, turned him from a local into a name spoken in hushed tones worldwide.

What’s stayed constant through all of it is the thing this carousel is really about - swipe through his own words and you’ll see it.

We keep seeing “acid house” thrown around like everyone agrees what it means. They don’t - and once you look closely, there are basically two acid houses, and the two barely know each other.

The first one is a sound. Chicago, mid-80s. Someone got hold of a Roland 303 - a bass machine so unloved the company had already stopped making it - and started yanking the k***s while it played, which the thing was never built for. Out came that squelchy, elastic, faintly seasick bassline. Cold, repetitive, completely hypnotic.

Then it got on a plane. British DJs heard it in Ibiza, brought it home, and turned it into something the Chicago lot never had in mind: ecstasy, all-night parties in fields off the M25, smiley faces, a tabloid panic that ran so hot the government eventually wrote a law against music with “repetitive beats.”

So one word ends up pointing at two things - a genre and a movement

New Yee. editorial just landed - sit down with SEIRYŪ, long-time CIPHER member and one of Hong Kong’s hypnotic selectors.

From his UK upbringing soaked in New Order, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, and post-punk vibes, to discovering the raw relatability of UK hip hop through Skinnyman’s Council Estate of Mind, Seiryū opens up about the sounds that shaped him. He takes us back to that pivotal 2011 Peckham rave (“with a bloke and his dildo” - you’ll have to read it), and how the gloomy British weather drew him toward Burial’s atmospheric resonance and post-rock warmth that still comforts him today.

He also reflects on the birth and evolution of CIPHER under Finsent C’s vision, the shift into hypnotic techno around 2014/2015, and the mindset he brings behind the decks.

All this ahead of his special Yee. presents _ set on HKCR .

The full interview with exclusive photos is right here in this post.

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark 等 post-punk 同 synthpop,到後來愛上 Skinnyman《Council Estate of Mind》嗰種真實又貼地嘅 UK hip hop 歌詞,Seiryū 同大家分享一路以來塑造佢音樂品味嘅經歷。

This hooded figure, head down in the quiet night, straight out of Burial’s world.

Untrue (2007) is the blueprint for a different kind of bass music. William Bevan took the rolling rhythms of UK garage and jungle, the weight of early dubstep, and turned them into something that feels like actual memory: chopped vocals that drift in and out like overheard conversations on a late train, vinyl crackle and rain as the texture of old recollections, sub-bass that sits deep in your chest while the whole track stays warm, human, and a bit broken on purpose.

He worked fast in Sound Forge, editing drums by eye so they keep that loose, skittering swing instead of sounding robotic. No massive drops for the club - this is music for night buses, empty streets after closing, or lying in bed replaying the day. It captures urban loneliness but also quiet hope, and it shifted underground electronic music toward real emotional depth that still influences producers today.

19 years later it still sounds fresh and personal.

What’s your go-to track on Untrue? Or which newer artists carry that same memory-like feeling?

Ben UFO is one of the clearest examples of a DJ who built a major career by focusing entirely on the craft of DJing itself. Co-founder of the influential Hessle Audio label with Pearson Sound and Pangaea, he started on London pirate radio (Sub FM) in the late 2000s and has since become known worldwide for radio shows on Rinse FM and BBC, plus club and festival sets that feel like complete, carefully shaped journeys. His selections draw from UK bass roots, techno, house and experimental music, connected with precision and surprise. In a scene full of producers who DJ mainly to promote their own tracks, Ben stands out because he has never released an original track. He treats DJing as the art form.

This carousel gathers five quotes that explain how he actually thinks about the work

“A good DJ does more than just put records in order – they can transform a record just by mixing.”

Context changes everything. The same track can feel completely different depending on what comes before and after it, and how it is blended. That transformation is the real skill.

“I want a coherent line that connects every set from the beginning of the night to the end.”

Nothing is random or filler. Every track and transition serves a single arc. The set should feel like one continuous thought from first record to last.

“I get to force my own interpretation of music onto other people.”

There is no neutral position in the booth. A strong DJ actively shapes how the music lands and shares their personal reading of it with the room.

“The internet can make you feel this constant pressure to keep up, but it’s a trap.”

This one feels especially relevant now. The endless stream of new releases, “must-play” tracks and online validation can pull attention away from the slower work of refining your ear and building real depth in your sets.

Which of these quotes lands with you m
