Today we hope for rest, rejuvenation to all the moms out there.

Have you heard of fiyèt Lalo ? She was the boogey (wo)man character of Haitian folklore that would eat kids. She was the counterpart to the tonton macoutes that would throw misbehaving kids into his sack and take them away.

But both these names were so transformed by the Duvalier régime that we barely remember their origin story in Haitian folklore.

If you are Haitian, I'm sure you've heard the nursery song Ti Zwazo. Let's dig into to it and what is signifies culturally.

It's been 166 years, we hear about the debt to France and the impact of that. But let's talk about the agreements Haiti made with the Catholic Church. Who lest we forget financed and ordered much of the trading and trafficking of enslaved Africans across the Atlantic.

As we read these histories, less try our best to understand and give grace to the decision makers and people living through the times.

Hindsight is 20/20 and I wonder all the time what the societal fabric of Haiti would be like absent agreements like this.
