The past few days have been incredibly difficult in Santo, Haiti, where the Papillon Marketplace artisan center is located. Armed gangs attacked international security personnel in the area, and four Salvadoran soldiers have reportedly been taken hostage. Several others also lost their lives. There has been intense fighting, and the situation remains extremely dangerous. All of this is happening just outside where our artisans are trying to work and deliver products.

I wish people could understand what it takes for artisans to continue producing and delivering their beautiful handmade products under these conditions. The metal artisans in particular are having an incredibly difficult time transporting their pieces to us. Trying to be sure all of the Christmas orders go out to wholesale buyers feels like an uphill battle some days. Something as simple as delivering an order can mean navigating roads controlled by armed gangs or areas where fighting could break out.

And yet, we keep trying. They keep creating. They keep doing everything they can to provide for their families and keep their businesses alive.

I am so proud of these men and women. I know that sometimes orders are delayed and things don’t arrive when we hope they will, but I also know how hard these artisans are working against almost unimaginable obstacles. Please keep the people of Haiti, and especially our Papillon artisans and their families, in your prayers. They are living through things that no one should have to endure.
