Unique Events and Highlights of the 1983 Season

Grueling Race Format: The 1983 season used a controversial format that demanded high levels of stamina. Drivers had to go through qualifying heats, 10-lap semifinals, and a 20-lap main event. Anaheim Mud Incident: The season opener at Anaheim Stadium featured a water hazard that turned into a mud pit. This led to the widespread use of goggle roll-off systems because the thick mud thrown up by the drivers in front demanded high levels of stamina and concentration.
