🏇 The Race That Must Never Stop 🏇
Every spring, near Market Weighton in East Yorkshire, riders gather for a horse race quite unlike any other… and have done so for over 500 years.
Welcome to the Kiplingcotes Derby — England’s oldest continuously-run horse race, first held way back in 1519. No sponsorships. No huge cash prize. Just four miles of farmland tracks, country lanes, and a community that refuses to let history slip away.
🎖 Win it and you’ll get just £50 and a trophy. But finish second? You get £4 of every £5 entry fee — which often means second place takes home more than the winner!
And there’s a twist: if the race ever gets cancelled, it can never be held again. So even through snowstorms, world wars, and everything in between, someone always shows up to ride.
Whether it’s professional jockeys or pony-club hopefuls, everyone is welcome — as long as they’re brave enough to take part in a race that’s part sport, part ritual, and entirely Yorkshire.
