Nightmare at the Met Gala!
Nightmare on Elm Street is my favorite film franchise. At its core, it’s a story about kids recognizing the adults in their lives aren’t hearing them so they battle the monster themselves.
Nancy Thompson is the ultimate hero. I wanted to pay homage to Nancy’s journey through this look. If she were to slay Freddy and then hit the Met, what would she wear?
Nightmare at the Met Gala
It's never just clothes. It's never just a movie.
I have always loved horror. I think it oddly is one of the most honest genres out there. In these dark spaces we are encouraged to explore every aspect of our identity and peel back the layers of society to expose how we make choices. Fear is expected. In many ways, it is fearless because you can shed that right at the door.
I saw Nightmare on Elm Street as a very young kid. It never scared me. I was so intrigued by the young lady on the screen who never wavered from her story. She saw something impossible, It caused her a tremendous amount of grief, she was not believed, she fought Freddy Krueger anyway. Nancy Thompson is the embodiment of a fearless advocate. In the first film she advocated for herself and her friends. She truly stepped into her power in Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors. In this film, Nancy turned all her adolescent fear into fuel and helped others.
For me, Nightmare on Elm Street isn't the story of Freddy Krueger, it's the story of the children who fought him. Monsters come in all forms. Freddy can be seen as charasmatic, funny, terrifying, and truly evil. (Like, he's really bad!) But again, I think Freddy is a great representation of the domestic evils a lot of people have around them every single day. This film (and The People Under The Stairs) gave kids a voice and permission to fight back. I've always read it as a thinly veiled metaphor for fighting back against domestic violence but there's a million ways you can interpret Nancy's story.
This interpretation started off with a white canvas. In the first film Nancy wears white pyjamas with pink flowers. We all know I don't go for pink. I wanted to create something that Nancy might wear if she defeated Freddy and celebrated at the Met Gala. The result was a white bustier covered in 'blood' and rhinestones with his severed glove atop the shoulder. I used Gunnar Deatherage's La Farfalla bodice and added straps for extra support. The stitching on the straps is alternating red and green thread on the wave stitch of my BablyLock serger. The bodice is made from the most luxurious ivory mikado. It feels so good on the skin and has incredible body.
The overskirt needed to pop! The striped fabric is actually two Minerva Core Range taffetas that I cut into 4 1/2 strips and then seamed together to create 4 metres of continuous striped fabric. I then placed a layer of tulle between the stripes and the ginger taffeta to help with shaping. The nursery rhyme was cut out of brown pleather and glued to the skirt.
Trousers are Charm Patterns Lucille's that I covered in blood and rhinestones.
The belt is a stretch belt from Penney's/Primark. I 3d printed the house and attached it to the belt with some velcro.
This was truly a nightmare come to life to make! I've wanted to make something based on this franchise for years! Thank you so much to Minerva.com for kindly gifting me these fabrics so I could create something oustide of the box and luxurious. These taffetas have such rich, vibrant colour and move like a dream.
