When Johnny McMahon of The 2 Johnnies announced his little boy J.J - two letters that stand for nothing and no one - he was carrying on a tradition older than he knew.

I went counting through the census returns. In 1901 there were 31 men in all of Ireland recorded as PJ. By 1926 there were 90 - in six fewer counties. And in 2025, the initials moved onto the birth cert itself: 22 baby boys registered as just AJ, ten as JJ, ten as TJ.

A new Rose of Tralee, and an old Irish name.
Congratulations to Caoilfhinn Ní Choiligh of Westmeath, crowned last night - and what a moment she gave us all.

Caoilfhinn comes from the Irish caol, slender, and fionn, fair or bright. It was carried by Saint Caoilfhionn of Kilkeevin centuries before it was ever called out in the Dome.
