🎶 Patrick Byrne - The Last of the Irish Harpers

Patrick Byrne (c. 1794 - 1863), often referred to in Irish sources as Pádraig Dall Ó Beirn, was one of the final masters of the Irish wire-strung harp, carrying a musical tradition shaped long before his lifetime.

Blinded at a young age, he trained with the Irish Harp Society in Belfast, learning techniques passed down from the old harpers at a time when the tradition was already fading. Byrne later performed across Ireland and Britain, preserving a repertoire rooted in the pre-Famine world.

Between 1837 and 1845, he performed for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, serving as Irish harper to the royal household. In 1845, he became the first traditional Irish musician ever photographed, captured in Edinburgh by Hill & Adamson.

By the 1850s he was living in Monaghan, playing for the Shirley family. In 1855, the people of Carrickmacross honoured him with a purse of gold, gathered as a public mark of respect. He died in 1863 and is buried there, remembered as a direct link to Ireland’s ancient wire-strung harp tradition.

🌿 “May the road rise up to meet you.”

One of Ireland’s best-loved blessings, carrying a simple wish for easier journeys, good fortune, and safe passage wherever the road may lead.

🌿 Éabha
(AY-va)

Éabha is the Irish form of Eve, one of the oldest names in the Christian tradition.

Its association with “life” comes from the Hebrew origins of Eve, traditionally understood in connection with life or living.

Written in Irish as Éabha, the name has become increasingly familiar in modern Ireland while retaining its distinctly Irish spelling and sound.

A short name, an ancient origin, and a meaning that could hardly be bigger: life.

🎭 “I’d never had any problem finding inspiration; Ireland was always just there, you know? All this richness of culture was there to tap into.” - Brendan Gleeson

For generations, Ireland’s landscape, stories, humour, music and history have given its artists plenty to draw from.

For Brendan Gleeson, that cultural richness was never far away.

🌧️ We come from the land of low skies, high spirits, and unshaken roots.

Ireland has always been shaped by weather, hardship, humour and endurance. Even under heavy skies, the spirit stayed strong, and the roots held firm.

That sense of place still runs deep, wherever Irish people are found.

🕯️ St. Brigid has long been remembered in Irish tradition for compassion, hospitality, healing and care for those in need.

Her legacy is tied to the hearth, the land, and the idea of creating peace through practical acts of kindness.

A fitting reminder that some of the strongest forms of care are found in what we do for others each day.

🎶 “I’m Irish, and I’ll always be Irish.” - Shane MacGowan

Shane MacGowan’s connection to Ireland ran through almost everything he wrote.

Born in England to Irish parents, he drew heavily on Irish ballads, emigration, politics, humour and memory. With The Pogues, he gave those influences a rougher, modern voice that spoke to people both at home and across the diaspora.

His songs rarely presented Ireland as simple or sentimental. They carried pride, hardship, exile, wit and belonging together.

🌍🇮🇪 Ireland may be a small island, but its influence reaches across the world.

Generations of Irish people carried their names, traditions, humour and memories with them to Britain, America, Australia and far beyond.

Today, millions still carry a connection to Ireland, whether through family, culture, stories or simply a sense of where their roots began.

🖤 “Time enough to sleep when you’re dead.”

A dark old saying with a very Irish kind of defiance behind it: make use of the days you have, keep moving, and leave the resting for later.
