🛟 Celebrating our newest helm at Helvick Head RNLI 🛟

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate one of our own this week, as Pat Devereux officially qualifies as helm at Helvick Head RNLI.

Pat’s journey to this point is a special one — rooted in generations of lifesaving tradition along the Waterford coast. With a grandfather who once fired the breeches buoy rocket in Bonmahon, and a family who lived and worked on the sea, the call to help others has always run deep.

Pat joined Helvick Head RNLI in 2015, joining the lifeboat felt like a natural step. Despite having no experience on lifeboats, he embraced every challenge with determination, countless training hours, and the support of his family, crew, and employers. Last week, all that hard work paid off.

Here’s what qualifying as helm means to Pat:
‘It’s an amazing feeling. I was always in awe of the helms here, and I doubted whether I’d ever be capable. Qualifying proved to me that I could and I’m incredibly proud to lead such an incredible crew when helm on exercise or call out. But it is important to remember that at every shout, it’s not just the four on the lifeboat who respond, it’s the wider station team. From shore crew and launch authorities, from fundraisers to families at home, every launch is a team effort. We are one crew and our job is to do what we can to help save lives at sea.’

Congratulations to Pat on a huge achievement, which is testament to his commitment, passion and leadership — qualities which, along with those of our other volunteers, help ensure that Helvick Head RNLI is always ready to answer the call.
