They do say time flies and this day 70 years ago Monica O’Toole turned the key on 7 Mary Street for the first time.
9th June 1948 Monica and Joe O’Toole set up a shop that would soon become a part of people’s lives from baby to old age.
Although Monica herself passed away in 2005 the shop is a testament to her hard work over the decades. Her son Joesph has continued the great tradition under the management and staff of Breda Mahony, Aileen Daly, Joan Walsh and Blanaid Bulfin.
If you mention Monica’s to anyone in the Dungarvan area they either shop there now for their kids, nana or mam, or they’ll have fond memories of being fitted out for their first uniform for primary or secondary school.
The decor of the shop is like a flashback in time, it hasn’t changed because it’s a gentle reminder of the legacy of all the years the shop has been established.
Monica’s continues to supply uniforms for 32 schools and there isn’t a child who has lost their school tie over the weekend that can’t be helped.
Monica’s also carries baby wear, accessories, children’s clothes, ladies’ knitwear and clothes, men’s braces and pyjamas. There really is something there for everyone.
Not to forget the wide range of wools and knitting equipment in store. There is many an afternoon an impromptu knitting or embroidery class starts up on the glass counter.
And finally we the staff and O’Toole family would like to thank you for all your years of custom and support. It’s because of you the key has been turning in the front door for the last 70 years.
