HOW TO GO PLASTIC-FREE

As we should limit our plastic consumption every month, not just July here are some tips and tricks to reduce your single-use plastic consumption at home.

Plastic Free July is a key initiative of the Plastic Free Foundation started by Rebecca Prince-Ruiz (the founder of the Plastic Free Foundation) and a small team in local government in Western Australia, and is now one of the most influential environmental campaigns in the world. Millions of people across the globe take part every year, with many committing to reducing plastic pollution far beyond the month of July.
Plastic Free July encourages people to sign a pledge to reduce their use of single-use plastic — as well as their overall environmental impacts — during the month of July. Plastic consumption has quadrupled over the past 30 years and it is so important that we all reduce our use of single-use plastic!

This collection of jewellery prototypes was inspired by Lough Boora Parklands, Co. Offaly; a place where I have a personal connection. I endeavoured to capture and convey the qualities I believe are particularly significant. Once harvested for peat, Lough Boora is now a wildlife and nature preserve, sculpture park and amenity for local communities and tourists. It also has a rich history from the discovery of a Mesolithic site dating back to 7,000 years ago to the more recent mechanised peat harvesting which began in the middle of the twentieth century.

My concept was to redefine wealth and explore it from an alternative perspective. I have used indigenous natural and industrial materials in order to communicate a true sense of place, enabling the wearer to feel more connected to the land. 5000 year old bog oak, obsolete locomotive parts and gorse flowers were some of the materials used.

Winning collection of the Cradle Fashion Show - Student Design Competition 2015.

Recycled collection made from dried palm tree leaves, corn on the cob husks, black sunflower seeds, burlap sacks, ivy branches, cardboard and charcoal.

"Initially when thinking of the theme ‘Futuristic Beauty’ I thought of a man-made world that had huge advancements in technology, but when thinking about the kind of future I would like I saw something different. I imagined people having a much closer relationship with the environment, taking more responsibility of what we take and what we give back. Considering how well mother nature recycles I thought it only fitting for this project to use her as my main source of inspiration."

Finalist of the Golden Egg Fashion Innovation Awards Student Category 2015.

The concept of this design is to break apart the traditional gender stereotypes still seen today. Feminine and masculine elements were fused into one androgynous look. The design aims to conveys strength, sensitivity, intelligence and beauty, thus communicating that we can be whoever we want to be no matter what biological gender we are. Breaking cultural boundaries for men and women. Be whoever you want to be, don't be defined by gender.
