Lou Brennan Design Bringing Stories to Life through my Fabrics.

At the heart of what I do is my love for traditional fabrics and methods and my desire to transport them onto cloth. These can be seen in the hand drawn sketches of the workers in the fields harvesting flax for linen, the women spinning wool, the rich patterns of the Galway shawl, all influenced by the colours of nature, the soft rambling rose, the blackberries, the ferns. This is my story.

Thank you for the lovely mention by Aoife wearing the “Deinim” denim blue, indigo and ivory silk scarf/bandana. I’ve always been fascinated by this particular weave pattern found in the iconic Irish/Galway shawls of which I have given many illustrated talks on. The original heavy blanket style shawls were some of the last to have been woven in Paisley in the early 20th century before the looms fell quiet. They’ve been depicted in paintings by Jack B Yeats, Sean Keating, Charles Lamb, Markey Robinson and many more.

So excited to see the print that Hussein Chalayan used on his tyvek suit today. I’d won the Royal Society of Arts award for fashion fabrics and had used this print on paperised silk.

‘Meabh’ - Antique Green and Veridian light silk twill scarf with tonal roses on a background of a finely drawn Carrickmacross Lace print. This new longer length, 60cm x 180cm offers many options to tie the scarf in a bow or loosely wrapped around the neck. I was especially inspired by the green Dior dresses at the V and A exhibition in 2019.
