Stop focusing on trying to 'hide' and start focusing on balance.

Lets focus on on understanding where and how clothes can create more harmony.

For many Pear shapes, that often means bringing a little more attention upwards through necklines, shoulder detail, colour or structure.

The interesting thing is that when balance is created, people often stop focusing on the area they were worried about in the first place.

That is the power of understanding proportions.

This is the first post in a brand new series where I am breaking down one styling principle for each of the five body shapes.

I do not want you to think of them as rules or restrictions.It is actually the opposite, it is quite freeing to actually have the knowledge of how clothes interact with our body. It really annoys me so much that we were never thought this, we were taught our size and just to accept the frustration of when clothes do not fit us right.

Today we are starting with the Apple body shape.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that styling an Apple shape is all about hiding the tummy.

In reality, it is often about understanding where the eye naturally lands first.

Most women I work with are surprised when they realise that the line where their top meets their jeans, trousers or skirt often has a bigger impact on the outfit than the tummy itself.

Small changes in where that visual divide sits can completely change the balance of an outfit.
