Alfred “Alfie” Date, Australia’s oldest man, became famous for a heartwarming reason.
Born in 1905, Alfie started knitting at the age of 108 after nurses at his New South Wales retirement home asked him to help.
His mission? To make tiny wool sweaters for Little Penguins affected by oil spills. These little jumpers helped keep the penguins warm and stopped them from licking toxic oil while preening.
Alfie spent his final years crafting these tiny sweaters with love and care. His creations, along with sweaters made by other knitters around the world, were sent to the Penguin Foundation on Phillip Island, Victoria.
At first, the sweaters helped in rehabilitation, but later they also started being used on toy penguins sold to raise funds for wildlife conservation.
Alfie passed away in 2016 at the age of 110, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, creativity, and kindness.
His story shows that age is never a limit when it comes to helping animals and making the world a better place.
