Àusli or ‘أصلي’ is an Arabic word that shares several meanings. Most commonly, the word means "original" or "native." It is often used in the ensuing question ‘where are you originally from?' or ‘where are you native to?’ The term is both culturally and politically significant, especially for displaced peoples. It chooses not to refer to where you are living but rather the land you are indigenous to. Other meanings include; indigenous, ethnic, and origin. Àusli or ‘أصلي’ helps draw a connection between an ethnic group and their roots at home. It is a powerful and unabashed connection between the displaced and their ancestral origin.
