The Value of Good Design - MoMA NYC

Noémi Raymond
Combination of Reeds (Left)
Strips, Trunks, Trees, Dots (Right)
Printed Cotton
Manufactured by F. Schumacher & Co.
Late 1930 & 1940

These hanging fabrics were a part of an installation at an exhibition held in NYC from Feb 2019 - May 2019. The exhibition explored the democratising potential of design, beginning with MoMA’s Good Design initiatives from the late 1930s through 1950s, which championed the well-designed, affordable contemporary products. The exhibition also raised questions about what Good Design might mean today, and whether values from mid-century can be translated and redefined for a 21st century audience.

Hand-crafted with Love | We collaborated with and reimagined her paintings as Tapestries. This particular one called Everythingness was made at our studio using 80 different types of hand-embroideries, 108 unique materials for all the hand-embellishments, hand block-printed edges and this piece of art took 90 hours to complete!

[Do look at our stories to see close-ups of some of the embroidery techniques]

Rest Day | Sundays stand still. Sundays start slow. Sundays are for watching the day develop. Sundays are for exploring. Sundays are for aimless drives, for cups of coffee, for reading, for cooking and for just resting.

Sundays are different. Sundays are special! Don’t you agree?

Hand Weaving | Tangaliya - Practiced in parts of Gujarat, this form of weaving requires high skill level and an eye for accuracy. Tiny dots of extra weft are twisted around a number of warp threads to create these beautiful geometrical patterns and forms. The essence of Tangaliya weaving is the composition created by these colourful dots on either sides of the fabric!
