Ambara

Ambara In today's retail scenario, Ambara is a whiff of fresh air. The Store is now appropriately housed in a heritage art deco building overlooking Ulsoor Lake.

This unique retail idea came to fruition when Ambara was founded in June 2000 in Bangalore - the brainchild of creative collaborators, Jaya Mani & Shashiv Chandran. At the heart of its unique positioning is the key philosophy: focus not on calculations of footfalls and bags, rather return the retail spotlight to aesthetics, service & the customer. This unique retail idea came to fruition when Amba

ra was founded in June 2000 in Bangalore - the brainchild of creative collaborators, Jaya Mani & Shashiv Chandran, who have spent decades working with artists, craftspersons, weavers & printers. Ambara showcases art, craft, jewellery, textiles, saris, garments, home accessories, furniture - all Indian in essence but mostly adapted to contemporary trends. The passion for detail & excellence has led to the creation of a who's who client base & Ambara is on the 'must do' list of most visitors to Bangalore. Over the years the Store has won an appreciative and loyal clientele & has been covered by magazines like Elle, Cosmopolitan, India Today & regularly by the dailies. But the soul of Ambara lies in its ethical precept: Ambara is recognised for the revival & preservation of India's heritage in art, craft & textiles. Ambara's retail mantra emphasises the concept of only few of a kind - no mass production, no computerised designing - just plain old world charm and elegance. In this day of Westernised malls, this has, for many, become a haven & an oasis of aesthetics and friendly service. Each room merges into the other in a creative display of taste & design. Ambara also embraces the concept of Inside-Outside. The garden space, run by the country's foremost horticultural company - Indo American Hybrid Seeds, is a riot of colour with exotic plants, perennials & garden accessories. Shopping at Ambara is thus an elegant day out and not a hurried shuffle through unending lines.

Twenty six years of Ambara ✨

What began as a small dream has slowly become a space filled with stories, friendships, colours, conversations, craft and community.
Every shelf, every weave, every handcrafted piece that found its way here has carried the touch of an artisan and the warmth of the people who walked through our doors.

For 26 years, you have celebrated handmade with us.
You have paused, lingered, chosen thoughtfully, encouraged craftspeople, and made Ambara what it is today.

Thank you for growing with us, supporting Indian craft, and making Ambara feel like home. 🤍

Here’s to many more years of handmade stories.

PALLU'S Chanderi edit is on at Ambara in the coming week

Rooted in revival and respect for craft, PALLU began in 2024 with just two weavers and has since grown into a community of 32 weavers and 12 artisans across villages.

Effortless, elegant, and grounded in handloom traditions — these are pieces that carry both comfort and story.

Some journeys refuse to fit into a single definition — and that’s where their beauty lies.

Manas Ghorai comes to Ambara with a practice shaped by curiosity, intuition, and a deep engagement with textile traditions. A self-taught textile researcher and creative entrepreneur, his work moves fluidly between design, craft, and art — bringing together memory, material, and experimentation.

Each piece reflects a layered journey — one that honours heritage while allowing space for new interpretations.

We are delighted to host a selection of sarees, garments, and accessories from Manas Ghorai at the store.

Do come by and experience this evolving narrative.

The highlight of last week was the visit to Ambara of a very special person ‘almost incognito’!
Protima with her usual bubbly warmth met her and in her usual chatty friendly fashion asked this familiar looking person, “Has anyone ever told you that you look like Leela Samson?” and rather quietly and modestly the soft, unassuming, gentle and almost apologetic person replied, “I am Leela Samson”.
Thank you, Leela Samson, renowned Bharatnatyam dancer, Padmashri and Sangeet Natak Academy awardee, film actor, author, teacher and much-loved mentor to generations of students, for making our day so special and for dropping by with so little fanfare. Protima’s smile reflects our collective joy! Some people make life very special. Leela Samson, you are one such! We look forward to seeing more of you and more like you!

Sometimes, it’s the smallest addition that brings an entire outfit together.

At Ambara, our stoles come in many stories and textures—each one adding its own quiet charm.

From the earthy ease of Kala cotton and soft Jamdani stoles by Salsette, to the cozy, layered woollens from Bailou.
From the rich, double-shaded Tussar silks by EcoTussar to the airy mul and eri silk stoles with delicate cyanotype work by Blue Collective.
Alongside, you’ll find handpainted watercolour linen stoles from To Be Two, woollen stoles with Phulkari prints from Asees, and the light, elegant Kota stoles from Sadhna.

Whether you’re looking to elevate something simple or searching for a thoughtful gift—these are pieces that fit in effortlessly, across seasons and styles.

Drop by to explore the collection.

At Ambara, we’re always drawn to stories that honour craft, community, and continuity.

We’re happy to introduce a small, thoughtful collection of sarees from Heeya — a brand that works closely with rural artisans to reimagine the saree for today.

Rooted in the textiles of the North East, Heeya brings together Assamese cottons, silks, natural dyes, and indigenous looms — while gently exploring newer expressions through bold motifs and contemporary drapes.

Each saree carries with it the hands that made it, the land it comes from, and a quiet commitment to sustainability.

Do drop by to experience these in person.
