Aat Pou Ray

Aat Pou Ray Aat Pou Ray is the Bengali way of draping saree..We offer exclusive range of designer Sarees in pure In the early stages, people of both sexes wore the garment.

The saree is mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures and depicted in Hindu paintings as far back as 3,000 B.C. In the Mahabharata, Draupadi's never-ending piece of fabric symbolised the triumph of virtue over vice. Not only has the saree seen the rise and fall of kingdoms, legacies and regimes but it has also fortified itself against many an alien influx with fortitude, grace and elan. It boasts of

various names such as saree, seere, sadi, though the term saree comes from a Sanskrit word sati, which means a strip of cloth. The same word evloved into the Prakrit sadi and was subsequently converted into the word saree. Some people attribute and garment to the Greek or Roman toga one see on medieval statues. But in all probability, the saree is purely Indian and originated from the compulsions of sub-continent weather conditions where cotton, from which the saree was woven, existed long before the legendary Greek invader Alexander set foot to Indian soil. Gradually, it became more refined, adjustable and in tune with the gender needs of men and women. With the passage of time, the garment came to be known as dhoti for men, and saree for women. Early examples of Indian art support the existence of the saree. Scriptures from the Gandharva, Mathura and Gupta schools (1st-6th Century A.D.) reveal that the saree in its earlier form was a brief garment with a veil. Ancient records also support the act in South India the saree has been for a long period a single piece of material which served as both skirt and veil. This trend continues to date in some rural areas as well. Legend goes that the saree was born on the loom of a fanciful weaver who dreamt of a woman, the shimmer of her tears, the drape of her tumpling hair, the colours of her many moods and the softness of her touch. Th saree energed from the warp and weft of his dreams, creating waves even as it loomed into view. And it looks as if the tide of its popularity will never ebb.

West Bengal climate is hot and humid thus the saris are made up of such a material which gives comfort to those who wears them. The most famous are Bengali Cotton Saris, which are famously known as TAANT. The Saris which is worn by Bengali ladies are colorful and vibrant and for every occasion, there is a special sari!

The cotton saris usually have prominent border with soft tissue paper type texture. There are various types of prints done in the saris like floral prints, solar prints and even modern art is also printed on saris.

Let me give a brief about the types of Bengali saris :

TANT SAREES -
Bengali cotton saris are commonly called Tant saris. In early days it used to be hand woven but now majority of them are machine woven. They have bright colors with decorative borders

DHAKAI JAMDANI -

These saris are basically of Bangladesh origin, and its name is derived from Bangladesh capital Dhaka.
In Bangladesh, weavers use fine Egyptian cotton, while the Indian weavers use indigenous raw material. Still, DHAKAI Jamdani saris are very famous in West Bengal ladies.

The traditional Dhakai Jamdani is woven by hand, and many take even up to one year to weave a single sari. It feels supple to the touch and drapes gently.

BALUCHARI:
Baluchari is a village on the banks of the Bhagirathi river in Murshidabad district. After a flood in the Ganga river and the subsequent submerging of the village, the industry moved to Bishnupur village in Bankura district. The sari industry prospered in Bishnupur, Bankura during the reign of the Malla dynasty. So it got the name. in these type of sari, weavers create independent pattern. This sari is usually five yards in length and 42 wide. The body of the sari is covered with small butis and a beautiful floral design runs across the edges. The anchal or pallu has the main decoration.

KORIAL
The Korial lal paar (red border) sari is what u see in TVs, cinemas while people depicting bengal, white sari-red border. It is identical to the Garad except that the red border is intense and solid in it. This sari is associated with Durga Puja, that is during festive season, Durga Ma is worshipped and offered these saris.

The GOROD
To understand difference in Korail and Gorod,
korial is plain red&white saree with heavy red border whereas Gorod silk sari consists small floral patterns in its white part with red border.

Apart from these sarees there are few others like KANTHA STITCH sarees which we all are aware of. There are a few new variety which is catching up very fast with the rest. Those are JUTE sarees.
Will elaborate on them in my upcoming write up.
