The PBerhampuri atta Saree (also known as the Berhampuri Silk Saree) is a Geographical Indication (GI) protected traditional handloom textile originating from Berhampur, Odisha, fondly known as the "Silk City". This iconic weave holds deep cultural and spiritual significance, famously being offered to Lord Jagannath at the Puri temple.

Distinct Elements⤵️

Phoda Kumbha Border: The hallmark of this saree is its distinct temple border pattern. Created using an interlocking weft technique, it features prominent needle-like triangle spikes reminiscent of temple spires.

Double Anchal (Pallu): Unlike standard sarees, authentic Berhampuri Pattas are famously woven with an elaborate, heavily designed double-sided pallu that stands out with intense contrasting colors and ikat motifs.

Pure Mulberry Silk: Traditionally handwoven on classic pit looms using 100% pure mulberry silk threads, giving the drape a high-density, rich luster and a heavier feel than other Odisha weaves.

Sambalpuri Sarees of Odisha are known as the finest handloom. Sambalpuri fabrics reflect an original style of craft known as Baandha Traditionally, craftsmen created Baandhas with images of flora or fauna or with geometrical patterns. More recently, new types of Baandha depicting portrait, landscape and flower pods are being designed. Baandha fabric is created using a tie-dye technique. The yarns are tied according to the desired patterns to prevent absorption of dyes, and then dyed. The yarns or set of yarns so produced is called ‘Baandha’.
