Meet Hamdan Muhammed , an architecture graduate from Avani Institute of Design, who turned his passion for photography, developed during his college days, into a growing career. Over the past three years, he has honed his craft as an architectural photographer, traveling across India to document both public and residential structures.
Hamdan firmly believes that capturing spaces authentically is crucial. Darkness holds as much significance as light in architecture, and portraying spaces with their natural interplay of light and shadow reveals their true depth, emphasizing truth over visual embellishment. He has a growing interest in public architecture and social landscapes, where photography transcends mere representation and transforms into a medium for storytelling and imagination. He loves playing with the idea of surrealism in ordinary spaces. His portfolio includes notable documentation of Calicut city for the Kerala Lalitha kala Academy’s project, “One School, One Gallery.”

Brief of Project-
Lies within the serene tropical setting of Kerala this house features a five bedroom spatial art concealing with a contemporary exterior. Meticulously zoned and placed, each space belongs at its finest position creating a spread out design for the house. The long verandah welcomes the user with a cozy sitting space alongside. The verandah divides the structure into two parts with a beautiful courtyard in between, creating an apparent immersion of surrounding nature to the design.

The interior features a vocabulary of beige marble, brass finish and warm wood with neutral colored furniture. The accentuating furniture pieces tan color and off colored curtains adds a chic style to the interior blending with the luxury. The beige walls carry a non-existent expression evoking a seamless sense and diluting the luxurious interior into calmness. The use of warm wood finish through all spaces unifies them to a single theme. The abundance of wooden finish throughout the indoors creates a comfort and compliment the tranquillity of light coloured walls.

The huge span of windows in bedroom and dining area passes all natural light to indoors. The lively landscaping and immersed green pockets in the design creates a constant indoor – outdoor dialectic and a path for eyes along the indoor circulation. The contemporary face of the house gets a slight fusion style with the slopes blending the design into tropical climate.

Brief of Project-
Nestled near a kaavu, a sacred grove intrinsic to Kerala’s heritage this residential project with 2520 sqft area, harmoniously blends the cultural significance of its surroundings with traditional architectural design. The plot is enveloped in nature’s bounty, marked by towering trees, dense foliage, and an inherent tranquillity that inspires a design approach sensitive to the environment. The residence draws profound inspiration from the spiritual and ecological context of Oachira,Kollam were the site is located in . Its design reflects a dialogue with the surrounding environment, respecting the kaavu’s sacredness and the cultural vibrancy of the area. Key features such as the gazebo at the entry resonate with the architectural vocabulary of the Oachira Parabrahma Temple. Flanked by serene water bodies, the gazebo mirrors the temple’s iconic entryway, creating an inviting and meditative space.

The material palette is a harmonious blend of terracotta, grey cement finishes, and wooden textures, rooted in Kerala’s vernacular architecture. These elements evoke a sense of warmth and tradition while embracing rustic modernity. The deliberate choice of cyan blue rafters and purlins reflects the vibrant hues of the Kaalakettu ritual from the Oachira Mahotsavam, connecting the home to the region’s festivities and spirit. This thoughtful design honors the spiritual and cultural essence of the region while establishing a unique identity for the residence.

| LA LINEA | The core idea behind La Linea was to blend a designer’s and manufacturer’s perspectives in creating furniture. As the name suggests, La Linea represents a line regulated by a specific design orientation, forming an infinite loop that culminates in a chair design. This concept integrates both design and manufacturing considerations. The chair is digitally crafted and designed for semi-automated fabrication using 3-axis CNC machining and digital component mapping. This approach allows the designer to manufacture the chair without requiring traditional carpentry skills, thus broadening the scope for designers to create components without being constrained by manufacturing complexities.

Ar. Balu Anil () and Ar. Ajaygiri P, as co-founders, developed Studio Iyra into a multidisciplinary design and fabrication startup that transcends boundaries. We blend architectural ingenuity with interior finesse and product innovation, crafting spaces and products that redefine modern aesthetics through a seamless fusion of creativity and cutting-edge manufacturing technologies. In addition to our architectural practice, we specialize in product design and prototyping using the latest technologies and techniques. We are continuously evolving as a bridge between traditional and advanced architecture, striving to familiarize and integrate these advancements within the community.

The old house at the site stood within a family estate, alongside three other residences belonging to the client’s father and his siblings. The objective was to fashion a new dwelling, while preserving the existing structure to accommodate the needs of the growing family.

Adapting the original footprint posed a formidable challenge, as the initial design catered to a modest family of four. The revised mandate necessitated the creation of a vacation home, capable of comfortably hosting both our client’s family and their sister’s family, when they visited their parents. Additionally, a paramount consideration in the design was to ensure that the ground floor of the house provided a warm and inviting space for the parents, when they stayed alone, fostering an environment conducive to enhanced interactions with their extended family members.

The architecture of the house is defined by the geometric lines of the sloping roof, that rests on a regular grid structure, in the middle of an organic landscape. It is designed as a living breathing house, to create a comfortable microclimate, in the interiors. The secondary filigree layer made up of precast concrete panels, create an intermediate semi-open living space that wraps around, and protects the main house. As the house had no boundary walls, it was also important to create a layered inward-looking space, that provides privacy. The central living and dining area, acts as the focus of the house, opening out to a water garden. The spaces around it flow continuously, between the functional blocks in and out of the house, so that the children can play and move around freely, throughout the house without being confined by the walls.

Brief of Project -
How can a forgotten landscape take shape in their souls? Is there something we can draw from it, or is it simply the art of mimicking nature?
NUT is a humble attempt to capture the essence of Wayanadan landscape through a deep understanding of nature. The project concept is inspired by swallow birds and their intricate art of nest-building. Swallows carefully select materials and meticulously construct their nests, reflecting our pride in attention to detail and commitment to innovation. The essence of the project lies with the local tribes, who have contributed to the construction process and maintain a deep connection to nature. Our primary goal for this project is to seamlessly blend the architectural design with its natural surroundings. The design concept focuses on integrating the structure harmoniously within the environment, creating a symbiotic relationship between architecture and nature.
The project is Currently under construction, this phase of documentation highlights the placement of built volumes and their connectivity within the landscape. The enclosed volumes, pathways, and nodes are thoughtfully designed to enhance the overall experience of the place.
